The Original Drinking Liberally

It's Time To Barack The House

(Note: 2 locations for tonight's Convention Watch:
The Tank downtown & Rudy's -- see below for details)

Michelle Obama's speech Monday night
& her personal story inspired a nation --
somehow we can't imagine Cindy doing the same.

Hillary Clinton showed the force of a fighter
tenaciously battling for a better America.
Next Tuesday, Rudy 9iu11iani will tenaciously
offer us a "noun-verb-9/11."

Bill Clinton reminded us that a President
could compassionately put people first.
The GOP is putting George W Bush first...
and hoping nobody tunes in to see him.

We have the grit & guts of Joe Biden.
Romney? Crist? Rendell? Jindal?
We welcome that fight...

And tonight, it's time to Ba-rock the house.
Too bad it's past McCain's bedtime.

Come together to toast the night
that an America story steps center stage
as we all share this American Dream
at your local progressive social club.

They're All Better Than Dick Cheney

Obama-Biden? The Long-Talk Express
would run the "Straight Talk" off the road
...if McCain doesn't do it on his own first.

Obama-Sebelius? Popular in the heartland,
suddenly, nothing's the matter with Kansas anymore.

Obama-Bayh? Dems would get to ask McCain
"Hoosier Daddy now?" as Indiana goes blue.

Obama-Kaine? Virginia is for lovers,
& would not be for grumpy old conservatives.

Obama-Dodd? His silver hair's
more Presidential than McCain's.

Obama-Clinton? Watch right-wing heads explode.
Obama-Clark? McCain would get shot down again.
Obama-Gore? The world would let us rule them all.

And for those of you worried about Obama's pick:
anyone of them is better than Dick Cheney.

Celebrate the pick or keep speculating
as we drink, discuss, debate & dream
at your local progressive social club.

Two nights of Political Dance
Friday, Aug 22 - 8:30 - Alexandra Beller's "Us"
Saturday, Aug 23 - 8pm - Works by 4 choreographers

In honor of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, The Tank presents two nights of political dance to kick off a week of convention watch-parties and politically themed programming.

Friday: Alexandra Beller's 'us'begins with the premise that patriotism can be an addiction that blinds us to the truth. Like any drug, nationalism can alter the chemistry of the mind, obliterating compassion, consciousness, and curiosity. In a series of duets with anthropomorphized objects (including a mop and an inflatable sex doll) Beller blurs the lines of dance and theater using text, song, virtuosic dance, and original sound design.

Saturday: In a collection of politically-themed works, four choreographers will address issues ranging from patriotism, propaganda, the political climate, and the upcoming election.

MORE INFO ON CONVENTIONS @ THE TANK EVENTS

Below are descriptions of each evening. All events are FREE; times are 7pm-11pm except where noted; the location is The Tank @ DCTV, 87 Lafayette, except where noted. The guest list is still in formation and line-up is subject to change.

Mon, Aug 25—Kick-Off Festivities with Laughing Liberally comedy throughout the night. Featuring performers from Comedy Central, MTV, The Onion, 236.com and its national tour, Laughing Liberally delivers smart, savvy, surprising laughter from the Left. Tonight, comedians will perform in between major speeches – and may offer some commentary during as well. Hosted by Elon James White. (Line-up in formation.)

Tues, Aug 26—– Let Your Voice Be Heard – an Open Mic. The Manhattan Young Dems invite activists, artists, electeds & all attendees to tell Barack Obama & the Democratic Party what direction they want the country to go. Offer commentary, comedy, poetry, music, rants -- as long as it's no more than 3 minutes, it's welcome -- and we'll stream your views live to Denver & the Democratic Convention. It will also be the night of Senator Hillary Clinton’s speech.

Wed, Aug 27— The Big Quiz Thing’s Noah Tarnow Hosts Political Pub Trivia. On the night of the VP nominee’s speech and President Clinton’s address, the host of popular regular quiz night brings game show-style fun – and great prizes – to the political arena. Attendees encouraged to test their trivial abilities, in between the night’s major speeches.

Thurs, Aug 28—Obama's Acceptance speech (and drinking game). The nominee will speak – on the 45th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech – and we will be ready to toast the moment…with a Drinking Liberally-patented drinking game of course.

Mon, Sep 1—Bush's Last Stand & Labor Day Barbecue (4-7pm at Rudy’s Bar – 9th & 44th). Even the GOP is so ashamed of their President that they have him speak on a national holiday earlier in the afternoon. But we’ll be there to roast him – and roast some dogs and burgers – while we toast him and his big farewell. Co-hosted by local unions as we celebrate Labor Day. Note the earlier time and different location.

Tues, Sep 2— The Big Quiz Thing’s Noah Tarnow Hosts Political Pub Trivia. If Rudy 9iu11iani is speaking, you’ll need a drink…and the host of the local popular quiz night will give you the chance to win drinks and other prizes as he tests the trivial strengths of audience members in and around the GOP’s major speeches of the night.

Wed, Sep 3—Laughing Liberally (comedy throughout the night). As the GOP Vice Presidential nominee addresses America, you may need to laugh to keep from crying. Fortunately, Laughing Liberally comedians from Comedy Central, the Onion, MTV and 236 are here to help, with comedy between the speeches…and some commentary during as well. Hosted by Onion Editor Baratunde Thurston.

Thurs, Sep 4—McCain's Acceptance speech (and drinking game). Special Guest Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, founder of Daily Kos, will be on hand to comment on the GOP nominee’s address (and sign his new book “Taking on the System”) – and drinks will be on hand to help wash McCain’s speech down…as Drinking Liberally offers a drinking game to toast the end of Convention fever.

John McCain Must Really Hate the Olympics

McCain's anti-Obama ads show that he sneers
when Americans cheer someone likable & popular
...boy, McCain must hate Michael Phelps.

His international policy is to go-it-alone,
& he scoffed when Germans gathered to support
an American that came in the spirit of peace.
...the torch ceremony must've made him nauseous.

He accuses Obama of elitism, though Obama
worked his way up from a humble background,
while McCain's family got him his placements
...impartial international judges must drive him crazy.

He's against enthusiasm, internationalism & meritocracy
...John McCain must really hate the Olympics.

Or maybe he wishes they were more like the old days
when men competed naked & women stayed home.

Come out to toast the Olympic spirit & global goodwill
& debate whether Obama or Phelps has the bigger fan club
as you share a night & a few drinks with fellow lefties
at your local progressive social club.

Anti-Conservation Conservatives & Anti-Rights Right-Wingers

Obama offers a comprehensive energy plan,
& accurately notes keeping tires pumped
saves more than offshore drilling will produce.
The reaction: Conservatives mock conservation.

The Bush team ordered a forged letter
to mislead America into invading Iraq,
deceiving Congress, distorting the press....
In short, Republicans subverted the Republic.

And in a military trial at Guantanamo
secret evidence & closed proceedings
are supposedly the road to justice.
Because the Right-wing opposes Rights.

Anti-conservation conservatives...
anti-rights right-wingers...
anti-Republic Republicans...

At least these lunatics are consistent.

Take a deep breath & enjoy a deep swig
and share deep debate or (light libations)
at your local progressive social club.
