Thursday's Primary!

Everyone ready?

For anyone who, like me, has trouble identifying things like the school district in which I'm eligible to vote or my polling place, go to the Metro Government's Davidson County Elections Commission. If you click on 'Find Where I Vote' (under 'Information'), you can enter your address and it will return a list of the districts in which you reside.

Compare those results to the sample ballot, and you'll have a good idea of which races you're eligbile to vote in, and where you might need some more information about candidates.

"When people look back and write the history of this issue, they will view the New York decision as the Gettysburg in this big contest," said Monte Stewart, president of the Marriage Law Foundation.

Wow. Let's take a look at that statement, shall we?

Gettysburg. So we're invoking the Civil War. You remember that one, the war where one side wanted (among other things, but we're using colloquial shorthand, here) to maintain a system of enslavement of people, and the other side didn't.

And who are the pro-slavery folks in Mr. Stewart's mind? Anyone who believes in marriage, much like freedom, is the birthright of all Americans. As is love, and committed relationships. Anyone who thinks that all children have the right to loving parents who cannot be discriminated against as parents.

Orwellian, via Wikipedia:
The term "Orwellian" usually refers to one or more of the following:

* Manipulation of language for political ends. Most significantly by introducing to words meanings in opposition to their denotative meanings.
* Invasion by the state of personal privacy, whether physically or by means of surveillance.
* The total control of daily life by the state, as in a "Big Brother" society.
* The disintegration of the family unit by the state.
* The replacement of religious faith with worship of the state in a semi-religious manner.
* Active encouragement by the state of "doublethink," whereby the population must learn to embrace inconsistent concepts without dissent.
* The denial or rewriting of past events.
* A dystopian or antiutopian future.
* The use of verbose and ambiguous language.

Yeah, I'd say that just about covers it.
