Sioux Falls

Ok. Ok. It is Tre's again tonight.

Last week, in the equivalent of a palace coup, we moved from Shenanigan's to Tre's (the old Theo's, Erota, Maine Lobster). Despite my initial skepticism about the move, it proved to be a very pleasant experience. The drinks were reasonably priced during "Happy Hour". Tre's has both smoking and non-smoking areas designed to satisfy every one's obsession. The food is very good and reasonably priced if you stay away from the main entrees. All in all, Tre's is a very good value, no more expensive than Shenanigan's and a relaxing and enjoyable experience for our group. So, it is decreed, we will stay at Tre's for awhile. Join us as we review the political happenings in Pierre, in Washington, in Sioux Falls. We may not know what we are talking about but we do have opinions. I, for one, think we should move the State Capitol out of Pierre to Pukwana or Mitchell or Salem as part of the Economic Stimulus package. Will anyone Drink to that.

We hope to see you this evening.

Since progressives believe in giving everyone a shot of the good life, we do not want our name to mislead anyone. We drink conservatively from 5:00- 5:08, moderately from 5:09-5:18, and liberally from 5:19 to whenever. And, of course, as the Beer and Alcohol Companies encourage, we always drink responsibly.

Location: Tre's at 33rd and So Spring St., Sioux Falls.

When: 5:00 Friday, Jan. 30th, Until: Whenever (But if you stay for Karaoke, you've stayed too long.)

Hosts: Sheldon Osborn 376-6852, Barry "The Man" Foster 728-1445, Eileen VanSoest, Diane Bryan, and Lance Moran.

Note: We move North to Tre's this Friday.

At the Inauguration Party on Tuesday, several of our Drinking Liberally regulars decided we should move to a new location and picked " Tre's" at S. 33rd and Spring St. as this week's venue. They like the ambience, the ventilation, the food, and everything else about the place. Their decision was fine with me especially after it seemed irreversible. (I love anarchy.) Besides what good is a meeting if everyone goes somewhere else. So, I recommend we all join them at Tre's, which formerly was "Erota", before being "Theo's" (yummy good), before being "The Maine Lobster", and decide for ourselves if we like the place. It will be an adventure.

It will also be the 2nd full day of Obama's Presidency, and if I didn't have this incredible hangover from eight years of Republican mismanagement, bellicosity, corruption, sophistry, and practiced selfishness things would be just about perfect.

I hope to see you tomorrow, Friday, at Tre's.

Because Drinking Liberally believes everyone deserves a shot at the good life, we do not want our name to mislead anyone. We drink conservatively from 5:00 to 5:09, moderately from 5:10 to 5:18, and liberally thereafter.
And, as the Beer and Liquor recommend, we always drink responsibly. Please join us.

Where: Tre's at 33rd and So. Spring St., Sioux Falls
When: From 5:00 PM, until whenever. But if you stay for Karaoke, you have probably stayed too long.
Hosts: Sheldon Osborn 376-6852, Eileen Van Sourt, Barry "The Man" Foster, Lance Moran, Diane Bryant.

Inaugural Party at Nutty's North, 6:00 PM

You may have already been notified, but just in case you have not, Grassroot South Daktoa, with the help of the Democratic Forum, the South Dakota State and Minnehaha Democratic Parties, and members of Obama's local Campaign, organized an Inaugural Party on Tuesday, starting a 6:00 PM, at Nutty's North ( on North West St., several blocks south of the Baseball Stadium). Everyone is invited to attend. Food will be provided and there will not be an entry fee. Those underage are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by an adult and may not consume alcoholic beverages.

I encourage everyone in the Sioux Falls area Tuesday night to come and enjoy the company of fellow Democrats. Jack Billion will say a few words, President Obama is scheduled to speak to all of the local inauguration events during the evening, and there will be interactive participation with Inauguration events in DC.

Join us if you can. Bring friends and family. And please help get the word out by making a special effort to inform others about our Inaugural Party.

I hope to see you there.

It is Party time. Special Announcement

Our efforts at organizing an Inauguration Party in Sioux Falls have borne fruit. Grassroot South Dakota will hold an Inauguration Party with the help of the Democratic Forum and the Minnehaha County Democratic Party , Tuesday January 20th, at Nutty's North ( N. West St., a little south of the Canary's Baseball Stadium) beginning at 6:00 PM, to celebrate the Inauguration of Barack Obama as President earlier in the Day. Everyone is invited to attend so please pass along this invitation and tell your friends and neighbors about this event and bring them along if you can. Appetizers will be served. Nutty's has a full menu in case your appetite is large. Minors accompanied by adults are welcome so think about bringing your family.

I know this will be a great day because I just heard Pete Seager sing my favorite verse of the Woodie Guthurie song " This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land" at the introductory Inaugural event in Wasington, DC. It goes:

As I was walking a lonesome Hiway,
I saw a sign that said 'No Trespassing",
I looked on the other side ,
It didn't say anything,
This Land is made for you and Me.

It will be a great day and it should be a great celebration.

Ding Dong.

Two things.

First, word has it, still no local Inauguration Party has been planned. I think we must have something some where. If you agree, come to Drinking Liberally tonight or contact me otherwise and let's see if we can put something together.

Second, after watching our current and soon to be Ex President give his perfunctory, partisan, petulant farewell address last night, my mind has been wiped clean of everything but the "Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead" song from the Wizard of OZ.

I know we are supposed to be positive and forward thinking but I think it is a hell of a good song to share this Inauguration weekend. . . . So, just in case you share my thought and my growing obsession for this song, here are the Lyrics:

Chorus: Ding Dong! The Witch is dead.
Which old Witch?
The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head,
rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead.
She's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below.
Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and
ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh,
sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked Witch is dead!

Mayor: As Mayor of the Munchkin City, In the County of
the Land of Oz, I welcome you most regally.
Lawyer: But we've got to verify it legally,
to see
Mayor: To see?
Lawyer: If she
Mayor: If she?
Lawyer: Is morally, ethic'lly
Citizen1: Spiritually, physically
Citizen2: Positively, absolutely
Choir: Undeniably and reliably Dead.
Coroner: As Coroner I must aver,
I thoroughly examined her.
And she's not only merely dead,
she's really most sincerely dead.
Mayor: Then let the joyous news be spread
The wicked Old Witch at last
is dead!

(Repeat Chorus)

If you want, perhaps we can sing it at Drinking Liberally tonight. That might help get it out of my head . . . . . " and ring the bells out, . . . Ding Dong the Witch is Dead . . . .. ."

I hope to see you at Drinking Liberally tonight.

Some numbers for your drinking pleasure.

Recently Dick Cheney and his sidekick, Shrub Bush, have tried to tell us how fortunate we have been to have had them in office the last eight years. To hear this notion repeated again and again has driven me to drink on several occasions. So it is refreshing to see a Main Stream Media organization (NBC) present numerical measures of the Bush Administration which allow us to draw our own conclusion about their performance. As they say, "Ye shall know the Truth, and it will set you free."

FROM NBC NEWS: Here's a "Then and Now" to show what the United States looked like when Bush entered office and what it looks like as he leaves. The "Then" is the figure as Bush took office in 2001. The "Now" is the most recent figure.
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
Then: 4.2% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, January 2001)
Now: 7.2% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, December 2008)

DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE
Then: 10,587 (close of Friday, Jan. 19, 2001)
Now: 8667 ( Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2009)

BUSH FAVORABILITY RATING
Then: 50% (1/01 NBC/WSJ poll)
Now: 31% (12/08 NBC/WSJ poll)

CHENEY FAVORABILITY RATING
Then: 49% (1/01 NBC/WSJ poll)
Now: 21% (12/08 NBC/WSJ poll)

CONGRESS APPROVAL RATING
Then: 48% (1/01 NBC/WSJ poll)
Now: 21% (12/08 NBC/WSJ poll)

SATISFIED WITH THE NATION'S DIRECTION
Then: 45% (1/01 NBC/WSJ poll)
Now: 26% (12/08 NBC/WSJ poll)

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE (1985=100)
Then: 115.7 (Conference Board, January 2001)
Now: 38.0, which is an all-time low (Conference Board, December 2008)

FAMILIES LIVING IN POVERTY
Then: 6.4 million (Census numbers for 2000)
Now: 7.6 million (Census numbers for 2007 -- most recent numbers available)

AMERICANS WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE
Then: 39.8 million (Census numbers for 2000)
Now: 45.7 million (Census numbers for 2007 -- most recent available)

U.S. BUDGET
Then: +236.2 billion (2000, Congressional Budget Office)
Now: -$1.2 trillion (projected figure for 2009, Congressional Budget Office)

And we have not felt the full effect of their policies yet. The worst is yet to come. You have to love those Republicans.

Remember, January 20th marks the end of an Error as we begin the slow process of changing course, of righting the ship, of repairing the damage. It signals a new beginning, but it is just a beginning.

I will see you at Drinking Liberally as we celebrate our return to a government run by Adults and contemplate the task ahead.

Since progressives believe in giving everyone a shot of the good life, we do not want our name to confuse anyone. We drink conservatively encourage, wfrom 5:00- 5:08, moderately from 5:09-5:18, and liberally from 5:19 to whenever. And, of course, as the Beer and Alcohol Companies e always drink responsibly.

Drinking Liberally Tonight. Shenanigan's.

Well. Well. Well. Given it is a Friday and the first work day of the New Year, you would think every one would ease into the day with a half day, a long lunch, and high fives all around. But it appears those crazy Republicans, those same crazy bastards who doubled the National debt, reduced the value of our public corporations ( and your stock portfolio ) by 1/2 in the last year, reduced our manufacturing (things we make as opposed to things we buy from someone else) to its lowest level in 28 years, gave away trillions of dollars to Bankers and their Banks in an effort to keep the Credit system working, not to mention The War in Iraq, officially sanctioned torture, rendition, Blackwater and private contractors run amok, Guantanamo Bay, special Military Courts, warrant-less wire tapping, and so much more self-serving, self-righteous, paranoid crap disguised as public policy it makes you want to puke in disgust. . . . yes those Crazy Republicans . . . have been hard at work preparing to stop our attempts to correct their errors. They are scheming to block reforms to our medical system, they plan to use the economic crisis to cripple public education, they are trying to steal the Senate election in Minnesota, they want to delay Obama' s stimulus package, and they signal they will disrupt Democratic efforts to change our medical system. Simply put, they are incorrigible. If they were in a vampire movie, we would pound a stake through their hearts. Unfortunately, in real life, this is not an option. So, since we can't ignore them , we must learn to tolerate them. We must listen to them. We must reason with them. ( Tolerate the intolerable. Bear the unbearable. Reason with the unreasonable . . . what a bummer. ) It appears our work has just begun. . . . I need a Drink.

Let's Drink to the future and to the work ahead.
