[Drinking Liberally] No Drinking Liberally meet-up this week

Liberals with hope for change,

Sorry for the late e-mail, but we just wanted to remind people that there will be no Drinking Liberally meet-up this week - which is too bad really, because there's so much to talk about.

Will Utah turn blue this election season? Will your Tivo be able to handle all the speech replays? Will Mitt continue to brown-nose now that McCain has chosen someone else? Will Palin figure out what it is that the VP does? Will the youth actually get out and vote this year? What is Palin's view on polar bears? Oh, wait... already know that one.

We don't have a regular Drinking Liberally meet-up planned for next week either, as it's not a 2nd or 4th Friday, but we're considering holding a McCain acceptance speech watch party next Thursday. In order to keep us awake, we'd turn it into a drinking game. If anyone is interested and knows of a place to hold it (Heather and Jeremiah don't have cable), reply to this e-mail and let us know.

September 12th will be our next regular meet-up, and when we'll most likely go back to meeting every Friday. The week after that, Sept. 19th, we will have guest speaker Del Vance out to tell us all about the strange and sordid past that Utah has with alcohol. Del wrote the book "Beer in the Beehive" and founded Uinta Brewing company, so he knows a thing or two about the subject.

On Friday, September 26th, Drinking Liberally will be joining the Young Democrats of Utah for a pub crawl in Park City. We'll have carpools and designated drivers; more details as we get closer to the date.

Until we meet again,
Jeremiah, Heather, Laura

Drinking Liberally SLC meets from 6:30-9:30 on the second and fourth Friday of each month through the summer in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S. State Street).

[Drinking Liberally] This Week at Drinking Liberally - Friday, August 22nd

Average American liberals,

Do you remember when George H. W. Bush stumbled when asked how much a gallon of milk was? It proved that he was a bit out of touch with the average American. But that question isn't nearly as telling as the one posed to John McCain recently. When Politico asked how many houses he had, his answer was: "I think — I'll have my staff get to you". HA!

It turns out he probably has at least 8. And who's the elitist in this race?

Join us this Friday in the back room of the Piper Down (1492 S. State) from 6:30 - 9:30 where we'll try to find 8 people among us who own even one home, post-mortgage crisis.

On Friday, September 19th, we'll have guest speaker Del Vance, author of "Beer in the Beehive" and founder of Uinta Brewing Company. Put it on your calendars now - this will be good!

On Friday, September 26th, Drinking Liberally will be joining the Young Democrats of Utah for a pub crawl in Park City. We'll have carpools and designated drivers; more details as we get closer to the date.

Speaking of the Young Dems, next thursday the 28th, they're having a convention watch party along with the Salt Lake County Democrats at Brewvies. More info at www.youngdemsofutah.org or www.slcountydems.org (and it's on our liberal events calendar).

Some of Utah's best bloggers have the opportunity to get a special press pass to attend the Democratic National Convention, and you can help them fund their trip. They're not asking you to sell one of your houses to help here - any amount will do.

From Jason at The SideTrack:

Help Send Utah Bloggers to Denver:

Utah Democratic Party Vice-Chair Rob Miller, owner of The Utah Amicus blog, has been granted press credentials for the National Convention (Aug 23rd to 29th) as part of the DNC's "State Blogger Press Corps." program, and has invited several Utah bloggers to join him - including one Cache Valley/Weber County blog (The SideTrack) - in providing unique grassroots coverage of the event.

Being bloggers, we are not equipped with the fundraising network that we are often able to create for candidates and the party.  And quite simply, this trip is going to be costly (but worth it!).  Hence, we are doing a bit of fundraising through PayPal to help cover housing, event access, equipment, and transportation costs in order to bring Utah live, daily coverage from the ground as citizen journalists.

Bloggers in attendance will include:

From Cache and Weber Counties:
Jason Williams (Hyrum, UT) and Craig Blanch (Ogden, UT) of The SideTrack

From Davis and Salt Lake City:
Jeff Bell of JMBell.org and Rob Miller, Bob Aagard, Aaron Thompson, and Ben McAdams of The Utah Amicus
(Misty Fowler of the blog Saintless and Utah for Obama is credentialed, but as of this release unable to attend)

I will also, through my temporary (?) guest hosting "gig" with Tyler Riggs at KVNU's For The People, be providing live on-air coverage during broadcast hours (4pm to 6pm, 610am, and live webcam stream at www.kvnuforthepeople.com) throughout the week of the convention.

This is really a unique opportunity, not only for those of us Rob has invited to attend, but for the entire state, as our press credentials will allow us access equal to that of CNN, ABC, NBC, and all other major news corporations.  Please help us make the most out of this first time opportunity with even a modest contribution, and allow us to bring a very Utah perspective and new life to traditional press coverage.

See you tomorrow!
Jeremiah, Heather and Laura

[Drinking Liberally] No Drinking Liberally meet-up this week

Summer sampling liberals,

There won't be a Drinking Liberally meet-up this Friday, but next week we'll be back in our usual spot throwing around our usual witty liberal banter.

We've got a couple events coming up, but no solid dates yet:

The author of "Beer in the Beehive", Del Vance, will be speaking to Drinking Liberally about the history of beer and liquor in Utah. Del was also the founder of Uinta Brewing company, creator of one of Heather and Jeremiah's favorite beers, Cutthroat Pale Ale, which won the gold in last year's North American Brewer's Association contest for Ordinary Bitters. In case you don't know, that's a big deal. And two of their other beers won gold in the same competition.

Del will be joining us next month sometime, which gives you plenty of time to run out and buy the book, read it, and bring it to Drinking Liberally to get signed.

Also coming up is a Park City pub crawl with the Young Democrats of Utah. These guys are always a lot of fun to drink with, so get ready to have a good time. More information as we nail down a date.

Until next week when we can talk about it together, here's a tidbit from former Democrat Joe Lieberman. Talk amongst yourselves:
"In my opinion, the choice could not be more clear: between one candidate, John McCain, who's had experience, been tested in war and tried in peace, another candidate who has not. Between one candidate, John McCain, who has always put the country first, worked across party lines to get things done, and one candidate who has not. Between one candidate who's a talker, and the other candidate who's the leader America needs as our next president."

Cheers,
Jeremiah, Heather, and Laura

[Drinking Liberally] This Week at Drinking Liberally - Friday, August 8th

Backyard BBQ'ing Liberals,

The Drinking Liberally SLC birthday BBQ was a great success! The Saturday's Voyeur show was hilarious as always (the run has been extended an additional 6 performances, so you can still see it if you missed it or want to see it again). Thanks to everyone who joined us at the BBQ and a special thanks to those who brought something to share. There are a few pictures up at our DL Flickr page with more hopefully being posted soon.

Join us this week when we'll be back in our usual spot at the Piper Down (1492 S. State St.) from 6:30 to 9:30. We can talk about McCain's latest misstatement, tire gauges, off-shore drilling, Paris Hilton's energy policy plan, the kangaroo courts in Guantanamo Bay and anything else on your mind.

Coming up:

On Wednesday Aug. 13th, Reading Liberally (hosted by John Karls) will be discussing the book "Obama: From Promise to Power" by David Mendell. For more information visit the RL bulletin board at www.drinkingliberallyslc.org/reading.

We're planning a pub crawl with the Young Dems of Utah in Park City. We don't have a confirmed date yet, but we'll let you know when we do. This of course will be open to lefties of all ages, and we'll be coordinating carpools to Park City.

In September our guest speaker will be Del Vance, founder of Uinta Brewing Company and author of the book "Beer in the Beehive", which talks all about Utah's love/hate relationship with alcohol since the pioneers settled the valley. See Bill Frost's interview with him here.

See you this Friday!
Laura, Heather and Jeremiah
