Screening Liberally Presents: CrawfordSubmitted by Marcus Williams on Thu, 08/21/2008 - 3:59pm.Hi gang. It has been awhile since Screening Liberally has made an appearance in Charlotte. Bush decides to call it "home"? This is a small town with a big story -- a microcosm of the last seven years. When Bush moves in, the insular town explodes overnight with flocking press, droves of tourists and booming opportunity. While the President uses their town as the perfect set-piece to project a folksy image, Crawford sees behind the scenes. Soon, the town's compelling characters feel the human impact of political stagecraft. The spotlight exacerbates tensions between conformity and freethinking, pushing a progressive teacher and her favorite student to the brink -- and beyond. In 2004, the town newspaper endorses Kerry; it's promptly boycotted. By 2005, the President's mounting problems follow him home, where 20,000 protestors do battle in Crawford's tiny streets. Now, tourist traffic has stopped. The town's boom is busting like the Presidency itself and left to pick up the pieces are the real people of Crawford. Their lives are changed forever. And their story is our own. DAVID MODIGLIANI (Producer/Director) makes film and theater at the intersection of the personal and political. He recently concluded his three-year fellowship at the Michener Center for Writers with the Austin production of his play, WIRELESS-LESS (nominated by the Austin Critics Table for “Best New Play.”) In May 2006, he produced and directed a 30 second TV spot for Austin mayor Will Wynn, which aired on all local networks. In July, 2006 his first documentary film, BAREFOOT AT BEETLEBUNG was screened on Martha’s Vineyard. He has a BA from Harvard University and an MFA from UT Austin. The Russians are acting spooky, Pakistan is getting new leadership, and the Jamaicans are the fastest runners on the planet. Here at home, Tropical Storm Fay gathers strength, Barack Obama's selection of a running mate is likely to happen any minute now, and, well, what can you not say about Michael Phelps? There's so much to talk about. Each time we meet, more and more of you come out to raise a glass, share your ideas, and make new friends. Best of all, there's a great bunch of stuff coming up, including the impending Democratic and Republican National Conventions, our own Drinking Liberally National Conference just two-and-a-half weeks off, and a handful of Presidential debates on the horizon. Stay tuned for the special events we have lined up for each. There's never been a better time to stop by. Whether you pop in every time, swing by occasionally, or are eager to show up but in the past haven't quite mustered the gusto, this is a great opportunity to grab a glass of wine or an ice-cold beer and mull over the events of the day with people who are just as interesting--and interested in their world--as you are. We're a group who's smart, casual, thoroughly engaging, occasionally a little rowdy, and always fun. We can't wait for you to join us! What: Drinking Liberally See you Wednesday! Peace, Marcus, Mark, Jeremy, and Andy Wednesday Night at Dolce Vita!Submitted by Andy Graves on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 12:54pm.Languid? Sweltering? Downright torrid? Suspicious that things are going to get even hotter? Well, perhaps you're right: it's time for another session of Drinking Liberally! No, this isn't a heat-induced hallucination. Indeed, just the opposite: it's the perfect chance to chill. For a couple hours of conversational cool, join us Wednesday, August 6, at the ever-funky Dolce Vita Wine Bar, in NoDa. You'll be glad you did. What's in store? In addition to a belated birthday shout out to Barack Obama, who turned 47 a day or two ago, we're thrilled to report that the Drinking Liberally National Conference is nearly upon us. Drinking Liberally National Conference? Yep. Over the first weekend in September, fellow D.L. movers and shakers will scramble in from all corners of the country for a day-long series of seminars and workshops, and we'll be throwing them a truly awesome, delightfully rollicking shindig the evening of Saturday, September 6th, so stay tuned. More on this tomorrow night at Dolce Vita, and, by email, later this week. What else is cookin'? Oh, the usual: endless Vice-Presidential chatter (it could happen any day), ongoing snickers about John McCain's technology foibles ("I am forcing myself--let me put it this way, I am using the computer more and more every day," he assured the Times), snickering about John McCain's age (he turns 72 later this month), and any other conversational hot topics you bring to the table. As always, the heat of your discussion will be tempered by the icy-cold pint of beer in your hand--or, if you prefer, the sanguinity of that glass of wine you're holding will also do the trick. Either way, Drinking Liberally offers a world of relief. But we need your input, so regardless of what you're drinking, or, for that matter, whether you're truly hot or just think you are, swing by and join the discussion at Dolce Vita. It'll be sooo cool!
