HoughtonA Nation Run by SwineSubmitted by Jeremy Sandrik on Wed, 09/17/2008 - 10:41pm.Hi everybody! Hi Dr. Nick! There's a free round for the first person tomorrow to tell me the reference for that joke. DL will be at it tomorrow (Thursday) at the Keweenaw Brewing Company in downtown Houghton starting at 8 pm. One of our members gave me some food for thought this week. She said, "I'm wondering why there is so much comparison between Obama and Palin. She's on the ticket as #2 while he is running for the president position. Unless the republicans are not expecting McCain to complete his term, why place so much emphasis on this." In the headlines, Obama's gained momentum this week. "The fundamentals of our economy are strong" has become "Our economy has the strength to be able to deal with these shocks." Troopergate thickens as Palin, once willing to comply with an investigation, has reneged on a promise to testify. Even MSM outlet CNN has concluded the McCain/Palin ticket is lying to the American people. Even Rove is saying McCain's campaign goes too far. Cloud cuckoo land, ladies and gents. I try to keep these weekly mails relatively short. As such, if you're looking for more lengthy rants or want to see events on campus or in the community, check the Houghton DL website and view the blog and calendar. http://livingliberally.org/drinking/chapters/MI/Houghton However, as it's short notice, I will pass this one along now from Mike Levin with the Obama campaign. I leave you with a quote . . . Mike's message follows. "In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: Not necessarily to Win, but mainly to keep from Losing Completely." ~ Hunter S. Thompson "THIS THURSDAY 9/18 at 6pm in the MUB Ballroom B-2 the Regional Field Director for the entire UP will be in Houghton to talk to students interested in how the UP fits in to Michigan and the overall national strategy. There are Obama Organizing Internships available with the Campaign for Change in Michigan. It will be a brief meeting and will let you know how to get involved and how Tech and the western UP play a part in Barack Obama’s once in a lifetime campaign. Email or call me with any questions! Mike Levin Field Organizer Campaign for Change - Michigan (231)-392-4467" Events this & next weekSubmitted by Jeremy Sandrik on Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:17pm.Hey people, There are a number of events in the area in the next two weeks I'd like y'all to know about. First, Wednesday, September 17 is Constitution Day. On MTU's campus, Mary Bejian of the ACLU of MI will be guest lecturing in several courses and will be addressing the campus and community at 7 pm in Dow 641 on Tech's campus. The lecture will be about threats to the constitution in 2008. Also on the same day at 6 pm, Mike Levin with the Obama campaign will be meeting to put in place a Students for Obama Internship program. This is not an endorsement, simply information. If you would like more information, please contact me ASAP. Of course, DL will meet at its regular time & place: 8 pm on Thursday at Keweenaw Brewing Company. This Friday from 7-11 pm in the Wads Annex on Tech's campus, Rock the Vote and WMTU will be co-hosting a concert. Come rock with us! Next Wednesday, September 24 at 6 pm in the Rozsa Center on Tech's campus, Rock the Vote will be hosting a special lecture by Ben Shapiro. He's a staunchly conservative syndicated columnist and author of several bestsellers. I expect to see some of you in the audience with some tough questions. I wish we could have him in for a DL night, but he's flying out early Thursday morning. Anywho, feel free to pass any of the above along. See you this Thursday at 8 at KBC. Also, we could stand to start a non-smoking branch of DL to accommodate some of our members. Anybody willing to head this up? Later, 3 things todaySubmitted by Jeremy Sandrik on Thu, 09/11/2008 - 10:26am.First off, Drinking Liberally will meet tonight at Keweenaw Brewing Company in downtown Houghton at 8 pm. Right now the Michigan Secretary of State Mobile Branch Office (SoS MBO) is set up on Tech's campus registering new voters, helping people with absentee ballots, etc. Whether you're a Tech student or community member, the SoS MBO can answer any questions you have regarding voter registration. If you're planning on running registration drives, this would be a great resource to get your questions answered. The SoS MBO will be on campus until 3 pm today. Finally, tonight at 6 pm in the MUB Ballroom A on Tech's campus, there's an Obama party. I'll be swinging by before taking care of the dog and heading off to DL tonight. Hope to see you tonight at 6 in the MUB and at 8 at KBC. Jeremy ClarificationSubmitted by Jeremy Sandrik on Wed, 09/03/2008 - 11:54pm.Sorry for the double whammy. Just to clarify: Who: Anybody McCain on the RocksSubmitted by Jeremy Sandrik on Wed, 09/03/2008 - 11:38pm.Who: Anybody Tomorrow night is McCain's acceptance speech. DL is partnering with People for the American Way to host a night of gatherings called "McCain on the Rocks." We're going to have a McCain limerick/haiku game going tomorrow night. If you feel so inspired, write a McCain haiku or limerick to share. Here's some tips: With KBC closing at 10 pm, I'm not sure if we'll be able to catch McCain's acceptance speech. Palin was on 'til about 11 tonight. I'd love a chance to play the McCain on the Rocks Drinking Game. Here's the rules: Those of us at DL can discuss where to reconvene if Johnny boy doesn't go on before 10. DT & Library have TV's. So does my house. I'll check the speaker schedule tomorrow and send a quick message. Hope to see you out! |
