Reading Liberally Cambridge: October : Taking on the System

Thank you to those of you who were able to make it out last night. We had a lively discussion on the 1960s and Perlstein's take on the Nixonian moment.

For the month of October, we will be reading Markos Moulitsas' "Taking On The System: Rules for Radical Change in a Digital Era". From kos, the founder of the Daily Kos website, and drawing from the works of Saul Alinsky, it's a tome on activism in the digital age.

You can pick it up at fine bookstores in the Boston area, as well as Amazon.com and other online booksellers.

For November, we will be shifting gears and thinking about the new administration and the Supreme Court with the help of Jeffrey Toobin's "The Nine". And for December, to add some lighter reading for a lighter month, we'll go fictional with Curtis Sittenfeld's "American Wife".

If you have any questions, or any book suggestions for 2009, please feel free to let me know.

Have a great day (and remember to vote if you're registered in Massachusetts for a specific party),

John

Reading Liberally Tomorrow: 7 PM, Clear Conscience Cafe

Hi everyone,

Reading Liberally Cambridge
Tomorrow, September 15th, 2008: 7:00pm

Clear Conscience Cafe
581 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA

All are welcome.

We will be discussing Rick Perlstein's Nixonland. Just a quick thing to think about for tomorrow night, to start the discussion. Read the last page or so of the book, in particular the last page. Perlstein ends Nixonland with the line "How did Nixonland end? It has not ended yet." What are your thoughts on Perlstein's ending? Does the current campaign prove that Nixonland is continuing, and what would end it?

Also, A few administrative things as well: For our next meeting (October 20), we are reading "Taking on The System: Rules for Radical Change in a Digital Era" by Markos Moulitsas. Any suggestions for November and onward would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and see you tomorrow night,

John

A reminder:

All are welcome.

The book for this month is Rick Perlstein's "Nixonland", an interesting and insightful tome on the divisions and events that shaped both the period between 1964 and 1972 as well as events today. It's also a very long book, as I have been finding out the hard way.

So if you have not had a chance to read it, or have only read part of it, come on by, as the 1960s movements offer a wide variety of great discussion both on the periods themselves (and the people who shaped them) as well as how they have affected modern day America. You won't be lost in the discussion, as the 1960s themselves offer us some insights into today beyond Perlstein's discussion and breakdown of the Franklin/Orthogonian divide.

So, if you have a chance, come on by for some great discussion. And a reminder that next month's book will be Markos Moulitsas' "Taking on The System". And remember to check out the chapter website at http://livingliberally.org/reading/chapters/MA/cambridge

Have a great week,
John
