The GOP's Endless Wars

Declaring he’d “utterly destroy” North Korea,
Trump used his speech on the world stage
to threaten, provoke, bully
and promise an America of endless wars.

He’s undermining the Iran nuclear deal,
making noises toward Venezuela —
and the Senate abdicated its responsibility
to demand a new vote on military force.

Meanwhile, the GOP goes after health care,
its never ending crusade to hurt tens of millions,
then prepares the next salvo in a constant fight
to give tax breaks to the superrich.

Wars for the rich, wars against health care
and drumming for the next war abroad --
we’ll be consumed by the GOP’s endless wars
if their party’s civil war doesn’t consume them first.

It’s a new season, the Jewish new year,
and time for new friends and ideas,

The Artifice of the Deal

Trump dined with Schumer and Pelosi,
and the Dems said they dealt on DACA
which Trump didn’t deny, then he did,
leaving everyone dazed and dizzy.

Last week his deal with Dems on the debt
left Republican leaders in the lurch,
but it’s a short-term patch for a bigger fight
of showdowns and shutdowns in December.

The GOP has one more Trumpcare bill
that nobody seems ready to touch.
They also claim they’ll rush a tax bill
that hasn’t been drafted, debated, discussed.

The self-proclaimed “deal maker”
is just as often a complete “deal breaker”
and amid the lies, bluster, and double-talk,
seems like his approach isn’t an art at all
and should be called “The Artifice of The Deal.”

Here’s a deal you can trust:

A Dream Deferred?

While claiming he admires Dreamers
and wants Congress to take action,
Trump and his pal Jeff Sessions
ended protections for 800,000 immigrants.

Congress’s August recess was swamped
with white supremacy, nuclear threats,
outraged constituents and DC shake-ups,
delaying any dream of a quiet summer break.

And now they’re back in DC
where Trump’s making deals with Dems
on debt ceiling and government spending,
Trumpcare threatens one last round,
and a tax fight looms large for everyone.

Dreamers and allies are outraged at Dems
for not going to the mat to defend DACA.
Republicans are mad at the White House
for taking away their debt ceiling hostage.
And nobody knows what Trump’s thinking.

Everyone is having their dream deferred
and we’re all working to make sure
the American dream doesn’t become a nightmare.

Escape the chaos and toast the camaraderie
of like-minded lefties and liberal libations

Unnatural Disasters

Hurricane Harvey battered Houston and beyond
flooding one of America’s largest cities.
The role of climate change isn’t yet certain
but given the storm’s force and ferocity,
there’s nothing normal about this disaster.

Heroic relief efforts are underway
but aren’t helped by years of Republicans
undermining disaster relief funding,
and underinvesting in government services
that tens of thousands of Americans will need.

While we should rightfully be focused
on how to aid those in the storm’s aftermath,
Trump’s also distracting us with tax cuts for the rich
and conflict with his own military leaders
over North Korea and transgender service members.

When a disaster strikes like Harvey,
Americans—and the world—pull together.
But when right-wing politicking pushes in,
“natural” disasters can have unnatural consequences.

A New Plan for Trumpistan

Trump delivers a major speech,
his new plan to change course in Afghanistan
only it's not new, there's no plan
and we're not really changing anything

He threatens immigrants in Arizona,
the press at campaign rallies,
Republicans over angry tweets
and threatens a shutdown over his Wall.

A white supremacist leaves the White House
but Trump out-Bannons Bannon
on his Charlottesville response
and praise for Joe Arpaio.

A reckless temperamental leader,
speeches reversed a day later,
policy by tweet, demagoguery at rallies,
threats against checks and balances,
scapegoating vulnerable communities
all sound like the rambling rantings
of a would-be petty dictator.

Instead of a new plan for Afghanistan,
how about a new plan for Trumpistan?
Because this plan ain't working.

But that eclipse was cool and proved
Americans can unite, science is real
and the natural universe is incredible.

CharlottesVillians

The Charlottesville tragedy was an alarm
about the danger of white supremacy,
yet Trump downplays the bigoted terror
and apologizes for the hateful violence.

Trump stands by toxic advisers
and Republicans stand by Trump,
offering words, but no action, no censure
and no reforms to challenge the hate.

Only a few hundred in the streets,
but it followed a year of campaign rallies,
years of venom spewed on radio and TV,
decades of dog whistle politics
and conservatives making deals with the devil,
and centuries of structural white supremacy.

Many villains in the Charlottesville story
but heroes too, from those who protested,
rallied in solidarity, took down monuments,
and Heather Heyer who gave her life.

We stand with Charlottesvillians
against the CharlottesVillians,
in the ongoing fight for the future of America.

What a week. You need a drink
and to revive your spirits in solidarity

Scarier Than One Mad Man With A Nuke

Trump improvisationally threatens “fire and fury,”
Kim Jong Un’s team targets Guam,
as two mad men compete to be the Maddest Hatter.

Trump is mad at McConnell that health care failed,
McConnell is mad that that he’s dealing with Trump,
and 200 days in, Republicans are mad
that their Congress hasn’t achieved anything.

Manafort’s mad the FBI raided his home,
Kelly must be mad at the White House in disarray,
Tilerson’s mad that he’s constantly one tweet behind
and Trump’s mad at Sessions, Rosenstein & Mueller
and fuming mad he hasn’t fired them yet.

August recess is proving no vacation
as the madness of D.C. infects the nation
centered on the Mad Man at the NJ golf course.

But Trump’s North Korea insanity proves one thing.
There is something scarier than a mad man with a nuke
… and that’s two Mad Men with nukes.

Stop the madness.
Can’t you all find another recess game to play?

In the meantime, cool down with cold drinks,
cool company and chill conversation
at your local progressive social club.

An Administration of Mooches

Sure, "Mooch" has come and gone
but the administration is still overrun
with Wall Street 1%-ers, foul-mouthed goons,
and relentless aggression toward journalists.

Maybe Kelly got Scaramucci removed,
but white nationalist Steve Bannon,
perjurer Jeff Sessions, liar Jared Kushner,
and hateful Stephen Miller haven't budged.

Meanwhile, the Congressional GOP
was stymied from taking healthcare from millions
but wants to let the superrich and corporations
mooch off of more tax breaks and giveaways.

Scaramucci wasn't the only "Mooch"—
the administration is filled with more like him
and moochers at every turn.

Do Or Die

The Senate GOP works feverishly
to pass a dangerous and deadly repeal
as McConnell and Trump use every tool
to threaten, bully, bribe, and deceive.

The headlines keep changing
as fast as the deadlines keep moving,
and Americans’ lifelines are threatened
as the GOP beelines toward a vote.

Dems deflected, denied, delayed,
but in the end if Trumpcare’s defeated
it’ll be because popular opposition
dug in, drove outrage and did all it could
to deal with these dastardly deal-makers.

Republicans are at a “do or die” moment
but if they “do” then many others will die.
So this is “do or die” for all of us.

And then we can get back to
Trump’s impeachable behavior
or maybe tackling big problems
like climate change, refugee crises,
wage stagnation, and crumbling schools.

You deserve a drink! And some democracy!

The Bill That Just Won't Die

Trumpcare is so bad they delayed a vote,
then they changed the bill, tried to rush the bill,
then they pulled the bill to try repeal
and that was immediately nixed.

The bill has 12% approval,
would take coverage from tens of millions,
and can’t get support of 50 Republicans,
yet McConnell tries to make the numbers work.

Now, they hustle for another new version,
still threaten to vote on a straight repeal,
and if they fail would even vote AGAIN
when McCain returns to work in the Senate.

How do you stop a zombie like Trumpcare?
We need to pull the plug on this bill,
because it just keeps coming back,
trying pull the plug on the rest of us.

Share a night with fellow left-leaners
as you share a few liberal libations
at your local progressive social club.
