DL tonight plus other stuff!

Hello everyone,

As today is the first Friday of the month, tonight we have our regularly scheduled DL meeting, at the usual time and place. (6:30 p.m. at Little Kings) As always, feel free to arrive as you want, as no doubt at least some of us will be there until 8:30 or 9:00 if not later. (BTW: if anyone feels like getting there early or happens to do so, see if you can stake us out some seating space, since probably folks won't be hanging out on the patio given the wretched weather.)

Now that I've got your attention, there are a few other things I wanted to pass along.

First of all, I wanted to draw your attention to the excellent article in this weeks Flagpole about the Washington Street Liberation Army (WSLA). The WSLA is a progressive leaning social group that has been involved in some very positive activism benefiting the local community. As some of you will recall, one of the main WSLA dudes, Ryan Lewis, was also an invited guest to one of our DL meetings in the fall, mainly because we were very curious to hear more about his well documented confrontation of Paul Broun regarding health care. If you haven't seen the video of that yet, you really should: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXm3Xe33CSM .

Anyway, the Flagpole article about the WSLA is at http://flagpole.com/Weekly/Features/WSLA-3Feb10 .

If you are interested in learning more about this group or joining/participating just search for their Facebook group and click the link to join. If nothing else, you will be notified of easy opportunities to donate food, clothing or other items (or your time/work) to benefit those less fortunate in the community. Also, they sponsor free midnight movies on Fridays at Ciné, and those are great fun.

Secondly, even though the DL holiday pledge drive is over, it's never too late to "tip your bartender." DL is a national organization that has grown by HUGE margins in it's 6+ years of existence and they need donations to be able to continue doing what they do and keep supporting local chapters like ours. Among other things, these funds are urgently needed for computer related expenses (Seriously, do you know how awesome their website is? You should check it out if you haven't yet or recently), legal expenses, and promotional expenses (like the awesome buttons they have sent us for free more than once). I know I am not the only one who would not want to see DL go away because of financial difficulties, and I know we all tip our bartenders at Little Kings. According to Josh Bolotsky at DL HQ: "If each chapter just signed up one $5-a-month supporter, that would fund us for over $20,000 this year, and erase a huge part of our budget gap going forward." There you have it: $5 a month. Just one person from our group needs to do it. I'm sure even more than one person from our group would be able and willing to do it, but they're saying if we can even get one person to do it, the benefit would be great. You can read more about this and make donations/subscribe at : http://livingliberally.org/tipyourbartender . Feel free to email us or talk to us at the meeting if you would like to make a donation but would rather not or are unable to do so online, and we can help you make it happen.

Finally, I just want to pass on this opportunity sent from Justin Krebs/DL HQ. If you want to donate to help provide relief for Haiti, you can go to Progressives for Haiti at http://www.progressivesforhaiti.org/ . We are told that 100% of your donation goes directly to Doctors Without Borders, an organization with a fantastic track record in prior medical crises.

Thanks for being so patient and taking the time to read all of that. I hope to see you tonight. Don't let the chilly rainy weather keep you at home! I'm sure LK will have plenty of hot drink specials to help warm you up!

See you soon!

Drinking Liberally Tonight!

Good afternoon, all!

Sorry for emailing so late in the day. I wanted to remind everyone that Drinking Liberally is happening tonight, 6:30 pm at Little Kings Shuffle Club.

Our last meeting of 2009 got a little mixed up due to a private party being held at LK, but we're ready to get back into the swing of things in 2010. So, let's meet!

Hope to see you all tonight.

Best,
Holly M.

Happy New Year and no DL tonight!

Hello all,

A very happy new year to everyone. I hope 2010 brings good things for all.

Since we expect most to be recovering from last night's celebrations, and also because Holly and I (and Margaret and Brandon) are out of town, there will be no DL tonight. Next meeting will be in two weeks, Friday January 15.

take care,
Patrick

change of venue!!!

Hey y'all

Sorry about the last minute notice but unbeknownst to us there is a private party at Little Kings. So we have relocated around the corner to the Manhattan. Join us!

DL tonight + announcements

Hello all,

As you know, tonight is our DL Athens meeting, the last one of 2009! We'll be there (@ Little Kings) starting around 6:30 and going until ??, as usual.

I've also got several important announcements that I've been meaning to get out for a while now. (Yes, I've been procrastinating!)

1. First of all, I apologize for not sending out an email reminder for the meeting two weeks ago. Holly and I had unexpectedly left town due to her grandmother being very sick. (Holly's nana is much better now and is out of the hospital.) We DID have a meeting then, of course, as those of you who came will know. Many thanks to co-host Brandon for making sure to be there on short notice.

2. Athens DL got a shout out in last week's Flagpole in the new "Miscellany" column. You can still see it online at http://flagpole.com/Weekly/Miscellany . (There is no direct link to the post that features DL, sorry.) You will have to scroll down about half way until you get to the entry that begins "Holiday Spirits" and has a photo from Trappeze. The author gives her spiel on DL Athens in the 5th and 6th paragraph. I would like to take this opportunity to issue a minor but important correction. Ms. Ely wrote that DL Athens is "under the leadership of Patrick Moore and Thomas Bavis." First of all, I'm not sure I would use the word "leadership" although I guess that it's used for lack of a better term. Anyway, our official title is "co-host." More importantly, besides Tom and me, Holly Moore, Margaret McCullers and Brandon McCullers are also co-hosts.

3. Drinking Liberally is part of Living Liberally http://livingliberally.org/living/about : "Living Liberally is a New York-based LLC, fueled by the volunteer energy of hundreds of friends and partners around the country...Living Liberally formed from a marriage between Cosmopolity and Drinking Liberally, and used to be known simply as Cosmopolity. The previous Cosmopolity -- which created the online calendar and organized social events to create easy access into political egnagement -- was founded by David Alpert and Justin Krebs in 2004. Drinking Liberally began as a gathering in the backyard of a Hell's Kitchen dive bar in 2003, founded by Justin Krebs and Matthew O'Neill." DL is a volunteer, grass-roots organization. They have been very generous w/us in sharing not just their amazing organization but also plenty of swag: the buttons, t-shirts, books, etc. This is all done WITHOUT any sort of membership dues, etc. However, given the nature of the DL/Living Liberally organization, they can't meet all of their expenses without donations. Along those lines they are currently having a holiday pledge drive and are challenging each chapter (DL Athens is a chapter) to raise at least $50. You can donate online directly at http://livingliberally.org/donate . This page gives you several NPR/PBS style "subscription" options, or you can make a one-time donation if you prefer. Please consider making a donation to help keep DL/Living Liberally going, as well as helping DL Athens reach its $50 goal. If you need help or are unable to donate online for any reason, but would still like to donate, email us, or see one of the co-hosts at tonight's meeting and we'll be happy to help you. Many thanks!

4. The thought of "leadership" made me think of Joey (aka Bryon) who was a regular DL attendee who recently moved to Germany. He is no doubt missed greatly by all, and he is someone who took the initiative to be a leader by always coming prepared with ideas for discussion, many times bringing printed information to share with the group. Anyway, if you were wondering what is up with him, and you didn't already know, he has been occasionally blogging with LOTS of photos at: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/byron_and_tracy/1/tpod.html .

There's probably more to announce, but that's probably MUCH more than anyone wanted to read, and my brain, now tired, can't recall anything else of importance to share. So, I'll just sign off!

Hope to see you all tonight. Happy holidays and happy new year to all!

Re: it's DL time! (tonight)

A minor correction. I now realize, thanks to Holly reminding me, that this will be the second meeting of the month, not the first. (And no, I haven't been drinking yet! I think I'm just looking forward to December starting soon...)

See you tonight

Hello everybody,

Whether you are ready to talk politics or just need to chill out with some friends, we are hoping you can make it out to the first DL of the month tonight, starting at 6:30 at Little Kings.

We're especially hoping for a good turn out tonight because it is possible a member of the local press may be stopping by to check us out. (And also, last meeting there was a grand total of five of us who were there, probably our lowest turn out ever, and the lowest in recent memory for sure.. I think people must have still been recovering from Halloween or something...) Anyway, we really hope you can make it out tonight. As always, feel free to come late, as we will be there for quite a while.

Hope to see you tonight,
