Reading Liberally goes to the movies

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

We will be attending Frost/Nixon next Monday evening (1/12) in lieu of reading this month. I won't know the movie schedule until Friday, but will most likely choose a movie ~7pm at the Park Place mall theater. Just FYI!
For February, we are reading Three Cups of Tea. Meeting 2/9/09 at 7:30pm. Place to be determined. I will have a reading list available for the next 6 months at Monday's movie event (will also send an e-mail next Monday!)

Next Meetings - Drinking Liberally joins the National Day of Service

Dear Drinking Liberally Members,

I wanted to let you know about a project that I am working on with the Obama Inaugural Committee right here in our community that I would love for us all to work together on.

On January 19th, across the United States, groups will be gathering in their community for an Obama Day of Action. Teams will be doing things such as:

• Environment – such as beach and/or park clean-ups;
• Hunger/Homelessness – such as serving food at a soup kitchen;
• Health – such as organizing a blood drive or volunteering at a hospital;
• Education – such as tutoring or volunteering in a classroom, or helping to fix up a school;
• Civic engagement – such as teaching children about democracy and civic participation;
• Military/Veterans – such as volunteering at a local veterans’ center;
• Faith – such as working with a local faith organization to run their children’s book
collection program.

On our next regular meeting date, Thursday January 8th, I will speak to those that are interested in helping Drinking Liberally with this project. We can plan a service activity together and while we are doing something great for our community we can also help promote Drinking Liberally. I hope you will all come out and get involved.

To help prepare for this nationwide Day of Action, the Regional Field Directors for the Obama Inaugural Committee Day of Action, will be hosting a phone bank Tuesday night (December 30th) 6:30pm at the Pima Democratic Headquarters. I would be VERY appreciative of anyone who is available to come and help us out. Our mission will be to contact Obama supporters and just let them know about different groups meeting around the city and try to plug them in somewhere so they too can get involved. This is meant to help all the various teams around Tucson build awareness for their events.

We can really make a difference.

I have included a letter below that I would like you to read. I will be filling out a webform on behalf of Tucson's Chapter of Drinking Liberally this evening.

RECAP:
Tuesday, Dec 30th, 6:30, Pima Co. Dem HQ - Phone bank to build support for all of Tucsons Day of Action events.

Thursday, January 8th, 7:00pm, The Shanty- During our Regular Drinking Liberally meeting, we will have a guest speaker and plannign session for the Drinking Liberally event for the Day of Action

Monday, January 19th - Obama Day of Action - this is the day we will hold out event. (There is also an option to hold the event during the weekend prior)

Thank you for all of your support!

Dear Volunteer,

Every time our nation faces crisis, our national experience has shown Americans rise to the
challenge. While government has an important role to play in helping rekindle our economy and
addressing the problems of a distressed nation, President-elect Obama believes each of us, as
Americans, have a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens. We
are one nation.

The United States is once again at a crossroads and that is why the President-elect hopes to use
the occasion of his Inauguration to rally our nation to commit to service in our communities. We
are asking for your organization’s participation in meeting this challenge.

In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday into a national day of
community service to further commemorate a man who lived his life in service to others. As a
tribute to that legacy and the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice
President-elect will launch a national organizing effort on the eve of their Inauguration to engage
Americans in service. This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,
January 19, 2009 and, unlike past calls to service, President-elect Obama will ask Americans to
do more than just offer a single day of service to their cities, towns and neighborhoods. He will
ask all of us to make an ongoing commitment to our communities. Never has it been more
important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face.

The call will go to all Americans to organize service projects and join others at events in their
communities. As the Co-chairs of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, we invite you and your
organization to join other Americans to organize service projects in your communities. The
Presidential Inaugural Committee will offer Americans a new website to help promote your
events and for Americans to make their commitments, build communities, find opportunities to
serve and share their results. These can be events that orient people to your organization's work,
engage people in direct service, or bring people together to reflect on Dr. King's legacy and how
they can commit to becoming more engaged citizens. To submit a service event that you will
help organize, please go to http://www.pic2009.org/page/s/DS1

We have a great opportunity to set the tone for the next four years and I know you will rise to the
challenge. Thank you for all your support.

Sincerely,
William M. Daley
Patrick Ryan
Penny Pritzker
Julianna Smoot
John W. Rogers, Jr.

"I’d like to write a short fun piece for examiner.com. Simply, I’d like to do a Drinking Liberally New Year…I’d like to hear what members of our group would wish for in the New Year.

Could you forward this request to the whole group and ask them to email me their reply? Just a line or two is fine (they’ll be posted with first name, last initial unless they say otherwise).

Thanks!

PEDANTIC REMINDERS:
We don't have a lot of rules at Drinking Liberally (for policy wonks, that is...), but please consider the following Eight Etiquette Suggestions:

I. Bringing some finger foods to share wouldn't kill ya, would it? Seriously, it's not wise to drink on an empty stomach! And don't forget the those in need who aren't with us, and bring your non-perishable food items.

II. Bring your friends and/or family. What, are you embarrassed of us? Your recommendation is the best way to help our community grow.

III. Bring your two ears as well as your one tongue, and use them proportionately.

IV. Introduce yourself, and tell others your news and interests. Don't be shy, we like you, we really like you. Feel free to propose a toast when the mood strikes you, too.

V. Tip the wait staff liberally, or they might spit in your beer. (Well, not really - but it's still the right thing to do)

VI. If you wish to smoke, step away from the other tables and make a temporary smoking table. The other jonesing nic-fiends in the group will quickly follow you, no doubt...

VII. Forward this email to your friends and family who you think might want to participate in Drinking Liberally. They can join our mailing list at http://livingliberally.org/drinking/

VIII. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! Know your limits and make liberal use of designated drivers. We want to see you back again next week!

Cheers!
