Drinking Liberally Olympia Chapter Blog

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night, Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Hi All,

The primary ballots are out. Now’s the time to research our candidates/issues, and share what we’ve found. Carole has asked for information on the candidates for sheriff. We’d add to that the question, What does a liberal look for in a sheriff? On the national scale, does anyone have a prediction about the shift of power we might see in the mid-term elections?

We're meeting at 7 PM at the Bally Hoo Irish Pub & Restaurant, 316 Schmidt Place, in Tumwater. It's right next door to the Schmidt Mansion. As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for the DL logo table toppers on our table(s). We’ll be on the patio if the weather’s decent, and in the back room if it’s too wet or chilly for the patio.

Hi All,

Will BP’s cap on their oil gusher hold? Is Geithner really opposing Warren as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency? Is there something we should know about the upcoming (30 days!)Washington primary? Will it stay warm long enough for us to meet up on the patio all evening?

As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us on the patio if the weather’s decent, and in the back room if it’s too wet or chilly for the patio.

Hi All,

The on-going saga of Washington’s ballot initiatives has moved to its next phase. July 2nd was the last day for turning in signed petitions, and at last published count six “Initiatives to the People” have made it on to the ballot for November. There is a lot of information on the winners and also-rans on http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Washington_2010_ballot_measures#Pr...

Brian and Kathryn will bring a list of the winners to the table tomorrow night. Someone needs to catch us up on all the other news. As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us on the patio if the weather’s decent, and in the back room if it’s too wet or chilly for the patio.

Hi All,

I’ll bet everyone has noticed that the Ballot Initiative season is upon us. If you feel the need to arm yourself with some facts, one source is the Public Disclosure Commission (www.pdc.wa.gov). Washington has been ranked best in the nation for five years in a row for public access to campaign information, and the database is easy to navigate.

I set out to learn more about the campaign that has spent the most money so far, so I looked at the information for one of the two (!) initiatives aimed at privatizing liquor sales in our state: I-1100, Modernize Washington. According to the Public Disclosure Commission this one has received $643,616 in cash and in-kind contributions. Of that amount, $642,121 (that’s 99.76%) came from (drum roll)…Costco. The two major expenditures so far have gone to Gilpin Group ($50,000 for consulting fees), and Citizens Solutions ($225,000 for signature gathering). If you’d like to know more about Citizens Solutions, check Goldy’s blog (Horsesass.org) for Feb 11, 2010. (Hint: who gathers signatures for Tim Eyman?)

Let’s meet up and tell each other what we need to know. As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us on the patio if the weather’s decent, and in the back room if it’s too wet or chilly for the patio.

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night, Monday, June 7th, 2010

Hi All,

Brian and Kathy have returned, and we need our Drinking Liberally fix! Drinking Liberally Olympia meets tomorrow night, Monday June 7th, at Bally Hoo’s Irish Pub in Tumwater starting at 7 pm.

In addition to a lot of political news, we hear that the Home Energy Evaluation program described to us at a DL meet-up last December has begun. This program offers comprehensive home energy audits and a customized, prioritized list of energy efficient improvements you can make. More information is available at www.thurstonenergy.org.

As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us in the (relatively quiet) back room.

Drinking Liberally hosts will be absent, Monday, May 17th, 2010

Hi all,

Brian and Kathy just heard that we’ll be unable attend Drinking Liberally on May 17th, due to an unexpected family emergency.

In spite of our absence, we hope you’ll choose to gather at Bally Hoo’s Irish Pub at 7 PM to discuss the political news of the past two weeks. There’s a lot to discuss, and since this is a five-Monday month, the next regular meeting isn’t scheduled till June 7th!

Hi All,
A couple of members have suggested websites that other progressives might want to know about. They’re stored on the Discussions tab of the DL Olympia Facebook page. Check them out, and let us know of others you want to share.

There’s an income tax initiative in our state, a new immigration law in Arizona, a massive oil spill arriving on the Gulf Coast. You can probably name another dozen topics we should all know more about. Drinking Liberally Olympia meets tomorrow night, Monday May 3rd, at Bally Hoo’s Irish Pub in Tumwater starting at 7 pm.

As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us in the back room (it’s quieter.)

Oops! Drinking Liberally tomorrow night, Monday, April 19th, not 18th!

Sorry, we should have said Monday, April 19th, since Monday April 18th does not exist.

Drinking Liberally tomorrow night, Monday, April 18th, 2010

Hi All,
Our last meetings have been really well-attended, and really interesting—two times in a row we’ve heard news stories on NPR on Tuesday morning that we’d already learned about at DL the night before. Let’s keep it up! Drinking Liberally Olympia meets tomorrow night, Monday April 18th, at Bally Hoo’s Irish Pub in Tumwater starting at 7 pm.

Also, if you have a progressive website you’d like to let the rest of us know about, bring the web address along. We can post it on the Info tab of the DL Facebook page for other Drinkers Liberal to investigate.

As ever, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for us in the back room (it’s quieter.)

We don’t know if it even needs saying, but always feel free to forward this to other liberal drinkers you know.
