Drinking Liberally at The Urban Onion 7 PM Monday Night, October 7, 2013

Hi all,

Local civic-minded groups are working hard to educate voters on candidates and issues (ask us about our weekend!) Meanwhile, the federal government shutdown drags on…but that isn’t going to prevent the U.S. Supreme Court from beginning a new term tomorrow, during which the conservative bloc will have opportunities to shift the law to the right on “settled” issues such as contraception, religion, abortion, and campaign funding limits.

Bring your thoughts, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. If you’re a newcomer, look for the DL logo table toppers on our table(s). This link will open a GoogleMap to show the location of the Urban Onion: http://g.co/maps/eu8pf

Two opportunities this Saturday - GMO movie and candidate forum

Hello all DL members,

I wanted to let you know about two opportunities for civic involvement happening this Saturday.

The Yes on I-522 (GMO labelling) campaign is screening the movie "GMO OMG" at 2 PM and 7 PM in Yelm. Details at https://tinyurl.com/odspkbv

The League of Women Voters of Thurston County will hold public candidate forums for the Thurston County Auditor and the Port of Olympia race, at 7:30 at the Olympia Community Center. Details at https://tinyurl.com/qzxqc5y

No Drinking Liberally on Monday Night

Hi all,

This is just a reminder that Sept. 30 is a fifth Monday, so we don’t have a meet-up scheduled. If you absolutely must have your political fix, we recommend the League of Women Voters interviews of local candidates. Videos of the interviews should be posted soon; we’ll keep an eye out for them.

The League of Women Voters will also be hosting public candidate forums for auditor and port commissioner on Saturday, October 5th (two days before the next Drinking Liberally meeting). Details at http://www.lwvthurston.org/calendar.html.

Hi all,

The weather is cooling and the 2013 campaigns are warming up. There will be seven initiatives on the November ballot; an unusually low number, and five of them are advisory questions to inform the legislature. The other two are I-517 “Protect the Initiative Act” and I-522 “Mandatory Labeling of Genetically Engineered Food.” Question: is there a progressive position on these initiatives? You can find more information about these initiatives and a whole lot more at the wonderful Ballotpedia website: http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Washington_2013_ballot_measures

Hi all,

"Okay, well, apart from the eight-hour work day, and the forty-hour work week, weekends, sick days, vacation days, paid leave, maternity leave, workplace safety regulations and health standards, social security, the minimum wage, pensions, worker insurance plans and benefits, child labor laws, the retirement age, unemployment insurance, disability pay, overtime pay, laws regarding discrimination and harassment in the workplace, and the downfall of the Polish Communist Party... what have the unions ever done for us!?" - http://matt-rock.newsvine.mobi/_news/2011/02/26/6140307-what-have-the-un...

Let’s meet up and toast labor on Labor Day. Bring your thoughts, bring a liberal friend, and forward this to other liberal drinkers you know. Drinking Liberally at the Urban Onion 7 pm Monday August 19, 2013

Hi all,
Some of you may wonder what a Drinking Liberally gathering is like. Some points:
• We don’t have an agenda; discussion is unplanned
• Sometimes we discuss the nitty-gritty of policy details, sometimes is national news, sometimes it’s local news, sometimes we discuss home improvement projects or the weather
• We generally go from seven to nine, but people are free to drop in and drop out whenever then need/want to.
• Drinking beer or wine is not required. We sometimes imbibe coffee, tea or soda.
• The size of our group varies from week to week. Sometimes as few as four, sometimes as many as a dozen.

Hi all,

Come join your local GOP (Gathering of Progressives)!

On Sunday July 14th some of us will be attending the 9th annual Progressive Town Hall Picnic and Candidate Forum organized by TC Pro-Net. This year they’ll have candidates for a number of offices, including Port Commissioner, several city council seats, one of the Thurston County Auditor candidates, and others. If you can’t be there, then on Monday night we’ll try to fill you in on what we learned.

Drinking Liberally Oly this Monday 7PM at Urban Onion

Hi all. Lots of big news in the past couple of weeks: Some good Supreme Court decisions (striking down DOMA and California’s Prop 8), some bad Supreme Court decisions (striking down part of the Civil Rights Act), and some I don’t know what to make of yet (Washington has finally got a budget; details yet to come). All good fodder for discussion over some very cold beer or other beverage.

movie in town: Greedy Lying Bastards

Another quick note: The Olympia Film Society is showing the documentary "Greedy Lying Bastards" this week, from Sunday to thursday. GLB is about the campaign to deny global warming. The trailers look really good. Kathy and I are going to go see it today (Sunday) at 5:00 at the Capitol Theatre. I hope you can make it to a screening.
