Drinking Liberally Naperville Chapter Blog

Sunday's Drinking Liberally

The Congress was sworn in (well most of them) and we are now at the beginning of the new administration. The question is can the Democrats collectively pull themselves together and get anything done? Will the Republicans filibuster everything?

I've been reading about "economic recovery plans". Some of these are nothing more than old democratic wish lists for spending while others are hard to tell whether they were put up by Republicans or Democrats (more tax cuts anyone?).

OK, if "we are the change we are looking for" what do you think would pull us out of this "Republican Depression"?

Naperville's Drinking Liberally will meet this Sunday at Quigley's Irish Pub at 43 East Jefferson in beautiful downtown Naperville at 5pm. We are usually in the "private" room. Just hang a right after you walk in the door and look for the crowd that's debating politics, economics, or religion and smiling and laughing about it. If you can't find us, ask the waitstaff or your bartender, they'll know where we are!

BTW drinking is not required. Come in have a soft drink and a snack and let's talk politics, religion, whatever.

See you Sunday!

Tuesday's Drinking Liberally

Everyone is up in arms over Rick Warren doing the invocation at Barak Obama's inaugural. While I think this is a slap in the face to gays and liberals, I'm much more concerned about some of the people he's naming to his cabinet. I see lots of conservative democrats and a couple of republicans but so far not anyone I would consider a liberal. The only liberal I've heard of so far is Biden's economic policy advisor, Jared Bernstein. This is far from the "change" I was expecting. I guess Obama forgot about the seed money the liberal group MoveOn gave him early in his campaign, when very few people were.

In honor of Rick Warren here is the Biblical Definition of Marriage codified into US Law.

A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)

B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)

C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)

D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)

E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)

F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)

G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)

Sunday's Drinking Liberally

Hey have you heard that our Governor might be in hot water?

Interesting piece of politics. If you impeach the Governor you get Governor Pat Quinn. That may change the dreams of some of the democrats that were looking forward to running against Blago.

Will Mike Madigan impeach the Governor and seriously hamper his daughter's chances?

The great thing about politics is there is ALWAYS something interesting to talk about.

Is anyone attending any of the Change Is Coming events that the Obama campaign is having this weekend? I'd really like to attend one of these, but I'm not sure I can. If anyone is going, let me know. I'd like someone to discuss what happens.

See you Sunday!

Sorry, I did this joke last time, but I just like hearing it!

One Sunny Day in Late January, 2009

One sunny day in January, 2009 an old man approached the White House from Across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The old man said, "Okay" and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The man thanked him and, again, just walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row
you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush. I've told you already that Mr. Bush is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?"

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."

Tuesday's Drinking Liberally

It's 60 days until Inauguration day! This Tuesday we will be giving thanks the the Republicans are no longer in power!

It's a mixed week, Lieberman got to keep one of his chairmanship positions (the one that he could cause the most damage with), but Waxman bounced a Blue Dog Dem off the House Energy and Commerce Committee chairmanship! Overall I'm calling it a good week.

Sunday's Drinking Liberally

I hope none of you accidentally showed up at Quigley's last Sunday. If you did, I apologize. Never fear, we didn't forget about you, Drinking Liberally is THIS Sunday!

Let's celebrate our victories (President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama) and drown our sorrows in some of our losses. The good news is overall Democrats did pretty well.

My next question is how do we get the Dems to be more liberal?

See you Sunday!

Sunday's Drinking LIberally has been cancelled

No, it's not because I don't want to celebrate. Quigley's is closed that night, so we changed the date to the following Sunday, November 16th. I hope you can make it.

I'll send a reminder or two next week, so plan on being there for what should be a well earned celebration.

Later,

Tuesday's Drinking Liberally

Looking at the calendar it looks like we are one week from the election! I'm starting to think that we are going to loose this thing by a combination of overconfidence and election fraud.

Will Obama be the Liberal I hope he will be? Will Sen Stevens (now a convicted felon) be defeated? Will we get a filibuster proof majority? Is that a good thing? Will Illinois pick up a few congressional seats? Have you been out there talking to the voters?

Fingers crossed that we can fix the mess the republicans made.

Debates, debates, debates......Three down, one to go. Obama seems to be ahead in every poll. That doesn't mean that we get to sit back on our laurels, that means we have to work even harder. Not only do we need a Democratic President, but we need 60 Senators so we can pass the legislation we need to try to repair the mess this country is in.

Let's seriously discuss what we can do. Have you talked to your neighbors? Do you even know all the candidates running? Have you considered volunteering for some of the candidates? They are in the final push and ever minute of your time is incredibly valuable. Please tell me you have yard signs on your lawn (some people ask how that helps, the answer is name recognition and to get people to know they are not the only democrat in the area). If you need help with any of these things, talk to Tom. He's a precinct committeeman (along with a number of our other members) and he should be able to point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately I wont be there this Sunday, I'll be sunning on a beach in Maui (I know, it's a rough life). But please come and help change our country.

Tuesday's Drinking Liberally

WOW! Good thing Democrats managed to stop putting Social Security into the stock market....... Fun times for all. Lack of oversite for years is now put the economy on the edge. Anyone have a solution?

The only good news in all of this is that people are paying attention to something other than flag pins and hockey moms. At least the general public is motivated and the economy is a strong point for the Dems........

Listening to the news and some of my friends, I fear we are going to lose this thing. What can we do to make sure that everyone learns the truth and gets out and votes? Tom's got an ad out asking what if we lose this election because we didn't work hard enough? What if he's right?
