July Meeting Reminder

It's been an eventful month since our last get-together.

From last week's events that so quickly erased memories of the Fourth of July weekend to Bernie Sanders's endorsement of Hilary Clinton today to Donald Trump's blizzard of bloviation to Republican notables choosing to give their own convention a by, we have much to discuss.

In the meantime, here are some links, some of them quite opinionated, to give you something to think about:

Sanders and the Clinton endorsement:

Elie Mystal on being while black:

In there a direct relationship between slavery and modern policing?

Does Donald Trump want out?

Donald Trump is miffed at Ruth Bader Ginsburg . . .

. . .and why Justice Ginsburg's speaking out may not have been a good idea:

Republicans who have something better to do (walk the dog, take out the trash, read a book) during convention week:

See you at Croc's 19nth Street Bistro, 620 19th Street (Cypress and 19th Street, one block east of the Convention Center), Virginia Beach. The fun starts at 6:00 p. m.

June Meeting

This is just a reminder that we will be meeting Thursday, June 9, at 6:00 p. m. at our usual location, 6:00 pm at Croc's 19th Street Bistro, 620 19th Street, Virginia Beach, just a block east of the Virginia Beach Convention Center with easy access to and from I-264.

The primary season is winding down and the political conventions are a month away. By the time we meet, all the primaries save one--the District of Columbia's--will be over and done with, so the picture on the Democratic side should be much clearer. Meanwhile, the Trumpling under of the Republican Party proceeds apace.

Accordingly, there should be much to talk about, fertile fields for diverting discourse. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

The Trumpling of the Republican Party

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday. After the events of the past month, we certainly have a lot to talk about.

By the by, I'm planning on going to the Living Liberally national conference in July the weekend following the Democratic Convention. It's a good excuse to see my son and daughter who are in Philly.

See you all Thursday.

Hope To See You Tonight at Crocs

I look forward to seeing everyone at Crocs 19th Street Bistro at 19th and Cypress in Virginia Beach tonight.

With all the campaign crazy going on, there's lots of stuff to talk about.

March Meeting Update: Aging Liberally

We had a lively gathering last night at Croc's and welcomed several first-time attendees. Indeed, we filled five tables lined end-to-end on Croc's outdoor patio, as we enjoyed the warm evening, despite the Navy jets doing touch-and-goes all evening.

Two of our members were celebrating birthdays and Patricia contributed a special treat: A cake in honor of her birthday appropriately decorated with the slogan, "Aging Liberally."

This is to announce that I have taken over Heather's duties as chapter host. I don't expect anything to change, but I will likely try to use the chapter resources at LivingLiberally.org a little more, so that we don't fall off the national organization's radar as we did during the interregnum.

Virginia Beach DL Needs Your Help

Dear Virginia Beach Liberal Drinkers,

We're looking for hosts for your local Drinking Liberally.

Hosting Drinking Liberally is EASY! All you have to do is decide on a location and time and send out reminders. We set you up with a mailing list and alias email and it's simple. Monthly, you'll receive emails from us and have the chance to participate in a national conference call.

Overall, it's no more difficult than getting some friends together. It works best if people team up. So whether you have a friend you would like to work with or not, just let me know if you're interested and I'll link you with another interested leader.

For more information, read here: http://livingliberally.org/drinking/start

In order to get you started, we'll schedule a 30 minute phone call to go over the logistics and then you'll be ready to host.

Keep Virginia Beach connected to the network of 200+ other Drinking Liberally groups nationwide.

Any questions, feel free to send me an email at [email protected]

Drinking Liberally Update

Good afternoon and happy June to you all!

First of all, a bittersweet announcement. After over 4 years at the helm of Drinking Liberally Virginia Beach, I have decided to step down as chapter organizer.

I've had a lot of fun over the years hosting DL, both here in Virginia Beach and previously in South Carolina. I've met some of the coolest, smartest, most passionate people I know through DL. I've made lifelong friendships and gone to places I might never otherwise have seen.

However, I feel it's time for me to take a step back and focus on my health and family. (You may have also noticed that I am no longer on Facebook as well.) If you'd like to discuss it further, I'd be happy to talk about it and what it means for DL in the future. My contact info is at the bottom of this email.

In the meantime, you may continue to meet on an informal basis at Croc's on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The owners of Croc's, Kal & Laura Habr, are very kind and accommodating people and I think you'll find they support DL and want to keep having us meet there.

Secondly, on a related note, if anyone is interested in stepping up to host regular meetings at Croc's (or other locations) simply email me and I can get you set up with the folks you'd need to chat with.

One of the reasons I've put off stepping down for so long is because of so many of you who have told me (at meetings, on Facebook, via Meetup, and through email) how much you enjoy Drinking Liberally and how much it brings to your lives.

Finally, I sincerely hope that you all continue to meet (you can even keep it going this month since we already have a reservation next Thursday June 11th at Croc's starting at 6:00pm.)

It is also my hope that DL continues to be a fun and comfortable group where local liberals get together for support and camaraderie, as well as to help each other and the community.

If you have questions, I'd be happy to talk. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 757-647-0387. Thank you to everyone who made DL so special for me and good luck to you all in the future.
