Drinking Liberally This Thursday in Chesapeake!

Post-election greetings, fellow liberals!

Join us at The Greene Turtle at Greenbrier Mall (1401 Greenbrier Pkwy #2260 Chesapeake, VA 23320) this Thursday for our regular "happy hour" meeting. We'll be conducting a post-mortem on the midterms, as well as discussing other upcoming events, DL and otherwise.

You can find us in the party room anytime after 6:00pm, you can't miss us! Come enjoy some great food and drink, as well as the warm company of your fellow liberal compatriots. :)

We can have an "open mic" if any of you have stuff you'd like to talk about or inform the group of, whether it's a current news item, upcoming event, or something you think DL'ers might be interested in!

As always, if you have suggestions for regular Drinking Liberally happy hours or you'd like to host an event, don't hesitate to suggest it on our Meetup page or our Facebook group.

See you then!

- Heather Hawkins

VOTE TOMORROW! Then join your DL friends!

Reminder: the polls will be open until 7pm tomorrow, so don't forget to get out there and vote! (Thanks to Daylight Savings Time ending, you might even be able to wake up early enough to go before work.)

After that's done, don't forget to meet us at Susan Lang's home in Kempsville for an election results watch and potluck party. The address is in the Facebook and Meetup event pages. If you need it, just reply to this email.

So far, we have people bringing ham, fruit, rolls, and caprese (mozzarella/tomato) skewers. Feel free to bring something for yourself or to share!

Our next regular happy hour meeting will be Thursday, November 13th. We'd love to hear if you've got a suggestion for where we should meet! So far, a few votes have been cast for Greenbrier since we've done Norfolk and Virginia Beach for the last couple of get-togethers.

Vote early, vote often, vote liberal!

Hey all -

Just a quick note to remind everybody that we will be meeting starting at 6:00pm tonight at FM Restaurant at 320 Granby Street in downtown Norfolk.

On-street parking is free after 6:00pm downtown. The MacArthur Mall parking garage (complete with shelter and security) is only $3 for the entire evening after 6:00pm. The Freemason Garage is $4 and the ground-level lot across the street is $5.

Bring your friends, bring your appetites, bring your ideas! We will be meeting in the main room, you can't miss us. :)

See you there!

Welcome back, fall. ♡- HRVADL

Fall greetings, fellow liberals!*

September was crazy busy, so it's been a while since I've sent out a chapter email. Bear with me! :)

One of the many things I did last month was attend the annual Living Liberally Leaders conference in Dallas, Texas.

If you'd like to take a look at some of the photos that were taken during the conference, you can check them out here.

It was awesome to reunite with my Drinking Liberally family once more in order to remember why we liberals need to stick together and what we have to learn from each other.

We had some great discussions about what Drinking Liberally chapters are doing all over the country, both for their members and for the community.

Speaking of community... elections are coming!

The deadline to register to vote is fast approaching: Monday, October 13th or 22 days before the election.

If you're still not sure who is running in your district or who you'd like to vote for, check out iSideWith.com. It's a political quiz website that's been around for a while, but it was recently updated to include real-time information for local elections.

Here's how to use it:

  1. Make sure you have the correct zip code entered before you begin.
  2. Once you click on Try the political quiz, be sure to expand all the questions in each section.
  3. Next, be sure to click "Choose another stance" on each question in order to see the nuanced choices you're given.
  4. After clicking "Choose another stance" for an entire section, a dialog box will pop up asking you "Would you like us to show all stances for future questions so you don't have to click "choose another stance"?" Click "yes" to this.
  5. You can also use the sliders next to each question to rate how important each issue is to you
  6. At the end, you will see "Virginia 2014 election issues". Answer these and click "Show my results"
  7. On the next screen, you will see your top 4 closest matching results with the major political parties
  8. Click "Show all parties" to see how your views line up with the party platforms of all major political parties
  9. Up in the top right corner, you'll see "Midterm voting guide" along with the names of the candidates running for local office whose public stances most closely align with your own
  10. Click "See more local candidates" and double check that the ZIP code in the top right corner of the map is correct.

From there, you can check out districts, set reminders to vote, all sorts of stuff! Share this quiz far and wide with your friends and make sure everyone you know is registered to vote.

ATTENTION: We will be shifting meetings around this month, so stay tuned. To find out where and when we will be....

As always, check us out on Meetup or Facebook to see what's going on with the chapter in real time!

So until next time, remember: When you drink liberally, always drink responsibly!

Heather Hawkins

✰ Drinking Liberally August Events! ✰ (starting tonight with DL Norfolk)

Before we dive in, I want to put on your radars that I will be attending the annual Living Liberally Leaders conference in Dallas, TX the weekend of September 19-21. If you have any questions for me or the national leadership team, please reply to this email or see me at one of our events. Also, the midterm elections are coming up in November, so be thinking about ideas we can use to boost attendance and come up with some new meeting events!

Now, a quick recap of this month's events. Ready, set, GO!

2nd Tuesday DL Norfolk is TONIGHT at Uno Chicago Grill in the JANAF shopping center at the corner of Military Highway and Virginia Beach Boulevard. We meet in the bar area starting around 6pm and we're pretty hard to miss. :) Check out our Facebook event page here and our Meetup page here.

Tomorrow is yet another installment of the Non-Fiction Film series at the Naro Cinema in Ghent so that means Screening Liberally! We will be seeing the film "Growing Cities". (And probably congregating at Colley Cantina before and/or after the film to chat.) BONUS: I just saw that they're turning it into a double feature! "Growing Cities" and (back by popular demand) "Fed Up"! Don't miss it! You can check out the Facebook event page here and the Meetup event page here.

Speaking of Screening Liberally, we will also ride again on Wednesday August 27th to see the film "Code Black" at the Naro Cinema as well. Facebook event here and Meetup event here.

Finally, the month will officially wrap up at Croc's 19th Street Bistro on the 4th Thursday August 28th. Don't forget to RSVP via Facebook and/or Meetup.

As always, if you have an idea for an event, post it up in our Facebook group, Hampton Roads Drinking Liberally, or suggest it to me on Meetup.

Thanks for all your support!

Drinking Liberally July Events

Happy birthday, America!

To kick off the month of July, we've already had a couple of fun DL events with more in store!

Come see us at UNO Chicago Grill this Tuesday starting at 6:00pm and join the conversation! We'll probably be meeting indoors at the bar like usual.

Our regular Virginia Beach meeting is on for Thursday July 24th at Croc's 19th Street Bistro.

We will also be discussing additional activities throughout the month. As always, if you have an idea for an event or you'd like to host something, please let me know or suggest it on Meetup!

All of this info is on both our Facebook group as well as our Meetup page. If you're not on there yet, won't you join us?

Come see your Drinking Liberally friends this month!

Happy June, everybody! We have some great stuff planned this month. :)

First of all, Drinking Liberally Norfolk is this coming Tuesday June 10th starting at 6:00pm at UNO Chicago Grill Norfolk. It's located at the corner of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Military Highway in the JANAF shopping center. Hopefully this month they will have opened up their outdoor enclosed patio bar and we can drink and mingle like tropical liberals! :)

Next up, there will be a Screening Liberally event on Wednesday June 11th at the Naro Cinema in the Ghent section of Norfolk. We will be seeing "Fed Up". Here's the lowdown:

"Upending the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it, Fed Up reveals a 30-year campaign by giant corporations, aided by the U.S. government, to mislead and confuse the American public. We have one of the largest health epidemics in history and the next generation of American children will now live shorter lives than their parents did.

With narration by co-producer Katie Couric, co-producer Laurie David (Oscar-winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth) and director Stephanie Soechtig, Fed Up is the movie the food industry doesn't want you to see. The experts interviewed include Michael Pollan, Mark Hyman MD, David Kessler MD, and Robert Lustig MD. (92 mins) Click here to visit official site.

Post-film speakers and discussion:
Mimi Rosenthal is a biochemist who recently retired from teaching and research in metabolism and nutrition at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Mark Haynes is in private practice at Coastal Chiropractic in Ghent.
Amy Price-Neff is a family physician and co-owner of Pendulum Fine Meats in Ghent.

We usually get together before the movie at one of the bars on Colley Avenue. If the weather is nice, you will find us outside on the patio! The movie starts at 7:00pm if you'd like to join us and stick around afterward for some great conversation and perhaps another beer! ;)

Our regular Virginia Beach DL happy hour is still on for June 26th at Croc's 19th Street Bistro. However, due to popular demand, we are also having an EXTRA Drinking Liberally Virginia Beach happy hour this month! We are going to check out Hair of the Dog Eatery in Loehmann's Plaza on Virginia Beach Boulevard on Wednesday June 18th starting at 6:00pm and going until whenever. This little family owned joint has only been open for a couple of months, but it's garnered nothing but rave reviews. Let's come out and support a local business and see what they have to offer!

Finally, I'd just like to say a little word about something that is near and dear to my heart. We (DL hosts) just kicked off this year's McKay Schwalbach memorial fellowship. In memory of my dear friend and fellow DL host, this fellowship pays airfare and hotel for one lucky DL host who's never attended a Living Liberally conference.

The past couple of years, we've pooled money, miles, and more to get one DL host out to the conference so they can meet other hosts and learn how to leverage LL's nationwide network.

This year, we decided to do a little something different. In addition to our usual host-only money pool, we're opening it up for anyone to contribute to help us bring as many people as possible to the conference!

Maybe this year we'll hear from hosts of DL Anchorage. Or DL Albuquerque. Or DL New Orleans. Who knows?? :)

Obviously, you are under NO obligation whatsoever to chip in. However, if you'd like to contribute, please visit: https://secure.actblue.com/page/mckay2014. Or if you're interested in learning how you can join me at the conference or start your own DL chapter, just simply reply to this email!

All of this info is on both our Facebook group as well as our Meetup page. If you're not on there yet, won't you join us?

Until next time, remember... when you drink liberally, always drink responsibly!

Hampton Roads Drinking Liberally - May 2014

May is here at last! And with it, plenty of lovely evenings for hanging out with your liberal friends!

Join us again tomorrow at UNO Chicago Grill for our monthly Norfolk happy hour. Folks will start showing up around 6:00pm and we usually hang out until 8:00pm or later. You can find us in the bar area-- unless we're outside on the patio, in which case, you will see us before you walk in!

The Living Liberally 2014 Celebration was May 1st in New York City, honoring the Working Families Party and raising money for Living Liberally's yearly efforts.

If you're interested in learning how you can help Living Liberally -- or if you'd like to accompany me to Dallas this September for the Living Liberally 2014 conference! -- just reply to this email.

Speaking of which, did you know there are Drinking Liberally chapters all over the country? Over 200 of them, in fact. Find some nearby or check one out while you're on vacation and make some new lifelong friends!

For those of you who are fans of Screening Liberally, we have some great events coming up!

First off, there's "Particle Fever" this Wednesday evening at 7:15pm at the Naro Cinema on Colley Avenue in Norfolk. They have a fantastic nonfiction film series each and every Wednesday night -- you don't want to miss it!

Next, we have another Screening Liberally coming up this Saturday afternoon at my house. We will be watching "The House I Live In", a 2012 documentary about the War on Drugs in the United States. I will be providing sodas and light snacks, bring whatever you may want to share! Check out the Meetup event here.

A couple of other films we've got coming down the pipeline are:

If you think you might be interested in hosting one of these events, or you know of a venue that would allow our group to show any of these films, please reply to this email or PM me on Facebook.

Our regularly scheduled 4th Thursday Virginia Beach happy hour will be May 22nd from 6:00pm onward at Croc's 19th Street Bistro. (And don't forget to come back to Croc's on Saturday morning for their summer kickoff of the Old Beach Farmer's Market!)

Finally, I have booked the party room at the Greene Turtle at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake at 6:00pm on Wednesday, May 28th for us to have one of our "DL Chesapeake" special events. In addition to regular menu items, they also have party platters, so I was thinking of ordering some buffalo chicken dip and maybe a veggie platter. Respond to this email if you'd like to contribute or just let me know when you see me!

Thanks and I think that's ALL for now. :)

Hope to see you tomorrow!

- Heather Hawkins, DL Hampton Roads leader

2nd Tuesday = DL NORFOLK!

It's finally starting to warm up outside (yay!) but as we all know, April showers are here at last and tomorrow will be no exception (boo!)

In any event, we still meet on the second Tuesday of every month, rain or shine, at the UNO Chicago Grill near JANAF Shopping Center in Norfolk, conveniently located at the corner of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Military Highway.

Tomorrow, UNO will be having a special event to celebrate their new look, so they're expecting a few more folks than usual. However, I called and spoke to the manager and he said he still has us on the books to meet at the high top tables in the bar area like usual.

We will begin congregating around 6pm, but like always, you are welcome to come when you can and leave when you must! We will be discussing upcoming events, including expanding our popular Screening Liberally get-togethers, as well as weekend events, Chesapeake and peninsula events.

So bring your ideas, your opinions, your enthusiasm, and your appetite. We look forward to seeing you!

- Heather

Drinking Liberally Norfolk: SEE YOU TONIGHT

Happy Spring, local liberals!

It's the second Tuesday, so you know what that means.... Time yet again to meet at UNO Chicago Pizza for dinner, drinks, and sparkling conversation! We will be in the bar area this evening as usual, starting around 6:00pm and hanging out for a few hours. Stop by and say hi, we'd love to see you!

Also, we will be having another Screening Liberally event! Join me at my home this Saturday evening, March 15th at 5:00pm for a showing of "Inequality For All". (Reply to this email if you need my address.) It's gotten great reviews and even those of you who've seen it have expressed to me that it's worth rewatching. I will be providing sodas, light snacks, and maybe a bottle of wine or two. Please feel free to bring anything you'd like to eat or drink to share.

Our Virginia Beach meeting this past month at Crocs was a lively affair, with quite a few newcomers! Sorry for not sending it the email last month, I lost my job and it's been hectic! I hope some of you will make the crossover and join us tonight in Norfolk. :-)

And finally, come celebrate National Agriculture Day at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market next Saturday, March 22nd! The event will be from 11am to 3pm at the corner if Dam Neck Road and Princess Anne. (Near the Landstown shopping center.) Come check out the livestock, buy some veggies, and meet some of Hampton Roads' local farmers. Hope to see you there!
