Drinking Liberally Milwaukee Chapter Blog

Holy @!#$&* -- Obama won!... and Drinking Liberally meets this Wendesday!

My fellow Milwaukeeans,

WE DID IT!!!

Congratulations to everyone who helped Barack Obama be elected the 44th President of the United States! It is thanks to every person who did a door or worked the phones that this was possible. The proof is in the pudding. Thanks to this, Barack Obama won Wisconsin by over 400,000 votes while John Kerry won only by 13,000. You did it!

If this feels like it's coming a few weeks late, it's because we're still going to be partying for the next several months. In fact, the special "End of an Error" Drinking Liberally is coming up in January to celebrate President Obama's inauguration. But more on that later. Right now, it's just time for another (very happy) round of Drinking Liberally!

--> Also: You may get food from next door at Cafe Centraal, or anywhere for that matter, and bring it in to Sugar Maple. All we ask is that you clean up after yourself.

(Sadly, I probably won't be there, as I'll be busy finishing my three term papers. But your Jeff Bedel will be stepping in as your surrogate host.)

*** When: 7PM on Wednesday November 19
(and every third Wednesday)

*** Where: Sugar Maple, 441 East Lincoln Avenue, Milwaukee

*** Map: http://www.google.com/search?q=441+east+lincoln+ave+milwaukee

Thanks for all you did to help us win!

The End of an Error is at Hand!

The end is in sight. And the beginning of something great is even closer. We will be hosting the "End of an Error/Obama Inauguration Party" on Tuesday, January 20. Planning will begin for that soon, and we'll be looking to our attendees for input on that. Stay tuned for more!

Election Night Parties in Milwaukee!

Dear Milwaukee DLers,

It's over soon.

Let's do what we can to make sure we're going to win this thing.

And then let's PARTY!

For your convenience, I am collecting information on public Election Day parties in the Milwaukee area. I've got five events listed so far:

1) The official Barack Obama campaign party is at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel, 333 W. Kilbourn Ave, Milwaukee, beginning at 9pm. This event is open to the public, and does not require a ticket

2-4) In Bay View:
- Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave., our fair host bar;
- Cafe Lulu, just up the street at Howell & KK;
- Blackbird, at 3007 S. KK (corner of Rusk and KK) is opening up and looking for party-goers to come.

5) Art Bar, 722 East Burleigh Street in Riverwest, has a big screen TV and "Free Shot for every Blue State!" Please be taking a cab home from there, as I have a feeling that's gonna be a LOT of shots dispensed....

If you know of any public parties I haven't listed here, please write back, and I'll get them posted on our blog. That's at: http://livingliberally.org/drinking/chapters/WI/milwaukee

*** Finally, I know we've all been waiting a LONG time for this, but please... if you do drink on Election Night, have a designated driver, or take a cab home. I know quite personally the devastation a drunk driver can wreak. It ain't pretty. (And yet I host Drinking Liberally...)

Let's get out there and WIN THIS!

Debate Party Pictures

There are debate party pictures over my personal blog, and more on Flickr. Enjoy!

Fantastic Drinking Liberally debate-watching party!

I'm almost lacking in words to describe how astonishingly well tonight's debate-watching party went. It just went that well. (And I'm kind of tired now.)

Tonight being the third Wednesday of the month means it was time for Drinking Liberally. As it perfectly coincided with the third presidential debate, we knew we had to make a party of it.

First off, I can't say enough good things about both Sugar Maple and Cafe Centraal. A big thinks to Bruno, Drew, Adrienne, and everyone at Sugar Maple, our elegant host bar. They kindly let us bring in food from Cafe Centraal, who deserve my second round of praise. Not only was their food outstanding, but they were able to take the big order without a hitch, and then brought it over for us and settled the bill there at Sugar Maple. Flawless all around.

(And Stacie got us ice cream from Babe's on KK!)

Finally, thank you to everyone who came. I met dozens of great new folks, and heard nothing but positive comments from them. Thank you for putting up with the horrible TV reception (how accustomed many of us are to cable TV!), and thank you for helping everyone have a wonderful time. Drinking Liberally wouldn't be nearly the success that it is without you all.

Our next gathering will be Eating Liberally on the day after the election, Wednesday Nov. 5, at Bella's Fat Cat, 2737 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in downtown Bay View. Let's all get out there to get out the vote and make sure we have Victory Custard that night!

Wednesday's Debate Party - Food! -- What You Need To Do

Hey folks, as we can bring in carry-ins (food) to Sugar Maple, I'd like to place a big order with Cafe Centraal next door. This will require a modicum of planning and coordination, but I know we can do it.

First, please look at their menu:

http://thecafecentraal.com/menu/mainmenu.pdf

Pick out an item you'd like to get.

BRING CASH. I will not pay for your food.

We'll place a mondo order, and enjoy it with the debate.

Again, we will be in the BACK ROOM at Sugar Maple. Ask at the bar and they can guide you.

Till then!
Jason.

Drinking Liberally - Debate Watch Party! Oct. 15th @ Sugar Maple

Drinking Liberally, Milwaukee's happenin'est social-political club, is having a Debate Watch Party!

We'll be watching the final debate between Barack Obama and John McCain at Sugar Maple, 441 East Lincoln Avenue this Wednesday night, October 15. The debate starts at 8:00, but we'll be there well beforehand, eatin' and drinkin' and carryin' on and carousing.

A few important notes...

1) Sugar Maple is a smoke-free bar. You can smoke outside, but please respect the neighbors.

2) It's cash-only. They do have an ATM there.

3) You can bring food in! Chip in, we'll get a big load of fries ("frites," as we bitter-élitists call 'em) from Cafe Centraal next door.

Let's have a great Drinking Liberally! Three weeks left before the biggest election of our lives... let's go!

Eating Liberally @ Beans & Barley on Oct 1 @ 6 PM

In honor of the precipitous election that's coming up in less than 34 days, it is time once again for us to eat, and eat liberally!

Milwaukee Eating Liberally will indeed eat tomorrow, Wednesday October 1 at 6PM up at Beans & Barley, conveniently located at 1901 E. North Avenue on Milwaukee's upper east side. We will most likely be on the patio, barring rain, so make sure to dress warmly! It's going to be chilly... But your hearts will warm at the sight of so many people coming together to eat liberally and support our rightful causes, be it electing Barack Obama or tossing out the county executive and his cronies. We'll be there!

So come one, come all, lefties and liberals, moderates and conservatives alike everyone is welcome. Here are the details:

*** When: Wednesday October 1 at 6PM

*** Where: Beans & Barley, 1901 E. North Avenue, Milwaukee

As always, Eating Liberally's unsobrietous cousin Drinking Liberally will be meeting on the third Wednesday of the month down at Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Avenue in Bay View. If we can't see you tomorrow, we hope to see you there.

Eat, drink, and be liberal!

Jason, Jeff, and the Milwaukee Living Liberally crew

MilwaukeeFood.com post about Milwaukee DL and EL

The first coverage of Eating Liberally can be found over on MilwaukeeFood.com! It helps that I wrote the article in question; not all media works like that, but we'll take what we can get. The story is enhanced by MilwaukeeFood.com's photograph of Beans & Barley, where we'll be eating next week Wednesday. But the classic photograph of our fine Mayor Tom Barrett... well, you'll just have to see.

In any case, Eating Liberally Milwaukee does meet this coming Wednesday, October 1 up at Beans & Barley, 1901 E. North Avenue. See you there!

(No would-be politicians were injured in the making of this event.)
