Battleground Event to Protect Gay Marriage

Living in San Francisco it may be hard to believe that proposition 8, which seeks to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California, may pass this November. It is extremely important that we reach beyond our progressive city walls to make sure the beautiful celebrations we all witnessed this year do not get reversed. One way to do this:

Join us on Sunday October 19 for Screening Liberally's most important event this year.

Comedian Heather Gold and Ali Mafi will be introducing the event with two short sets of comedy. The Academy-Award Winning, short documentary film Freeheld (38minutes) will then be screened. Afterward, a panel of speakers will discuss the state of Gay marriage in California and explain how you can get involved to keep Gay marriage legal.

One Hundred Percent of sales will go to the No on Prop 8 campaign.

Don't miss your chance to get involved, the election is less than a month away!

BATTLE IN SEATTLE

Dramatization of 1999 WTO protests - Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin, Michelle Rodriguez lead ensemble cast

SCREENING INFORMATION:

DATE/TIME: Monday, September 15, 2008, 7:30pm

LOCATION: Embarcadero Center Cinema, 1 Embarcadero Center, Promenade Level, SF

In 1999, five days rocked the world as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Seattle in protest of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Environmentalists, consumer advocates, labor unions, students, anarchists and pacifists all converged, bringing attention to how the WTO’s laws were affecting democracy around the world.

Among them are Django (Andre Benjamin), Sam (Jennifer Carpenter), Lou (Michelle Rodriguez) and Jay (Martin Henderson). United in their desire to be heard and to make a difference, for these protesters, this is very personal and the stakes are higher than mere politics. A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot and an eventual State of Emergency results. The streets are mayhem, the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they make will change their lives forever and prove, ultimately, that ordinary people can change the world.

With his ensemble cast writer/director Stuart Townsend intertwines different points of view from a cross section of society – from protestors and police to delegates and doctors – who intentionally or accidentally find themselves on the streets of Seattle in those last days of the millennium. Townsend merges footage of the real event with his fictional narrative and, ultimately, BATTLE IN SEATTLE illustrates that, even against incredible odds, ordinary people can change the world.

Redwood Palms Pictures presents BATTLE IN SEATTLE, opening on September 19, 2008, at Landmark’s Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco -- additional Bay Area cities will open on that date or later (tbd), including Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.
