Lost in Transition - What Would Scarlett Do?
Submitted by Richard Rozzelle on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 8:01am.
In struggling for a good topic, I was reminded of Lost in Translation, Scarlett Johansson's breakout role, where her character, trapped in Tokyo with no friends, has to choose between two men: one is her new husband (Giovanni Ribisi), who is busy working at photo shoots, while he leaves her alone at the hotel, and the other is a past-his-prime American movie star (Bill Murray) stuck in the same hotel, who feels as much culture shock as she does. She befriends the movie star, and through their exchanges, their mutual appreciation--dare I say chemistry--becomes evident. In the end, a choice arises: should she stay faithful to neglectful Ribisi, or should she take her friendship with Murray to the next level? What should Scarlett do? So, in a pique of hyperbole, I ask: Who should Scarlett vote for--the young guy or the old guy? Obama or McCain? Okay, it's a lame analogy. (I made a similar analogy in an English essay once, and my professor thought it ludicrous.) So, what should we talk about instead? Are we wonkish enough to wager on the makeup of Obama's future cabinet, or should we instead lambaste the Auto Execs for flying their company lear jets to Washington to ask for money? Or maybe we should berate the bad economy? Personally, I'd rather be hugging puppies. Will William bring a furry animal to the Green Bean? Come at 7:30 pm and find out! William Moates |
