Hanover BlogThis Thursday: Drinking Liberally in HanoverSubmitted by Ed Tracey on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 6:31pm.The next gathering of Drinking Liberally takes place this coming Thursday at its normal date/venue. Please join us for a coffee, beer, soda and/or a meal and take part in our spirited discourse. Current political topics are the norm (and the events in Chicago and Minnesota are as strange as ever) but other topics (films, vacations, local politics, etc.) are all welcome, and we have a public policy book-and-video swap. Hope that your holiday season was great and that we'll see you! -------------------------------------------------------- The 2nd Thursday/Last Tuesday each month (from 7-9 P.M.) Ask for our table at the reception desk. Cancelling tonight's Drinking LiberallySubmitted by Ed Tracey on Thu, 12/11/2008 - 1:17pm.Hi, everyone - in view of the forecasted sleet/freezing rain for later today (and especially this evening) Beth and I feel we should cancel tonight's Drinking Liberally. As a result we won't be gathering next until January 8th and so we'd like to wish everyone the best this holiday season. Cancelling tonight's Drinking LiberallySubmitted by Ed Tracey on Thu, 12/11/2008 - 1:16pm.Hi, everyone - in view of the forecasted sleet/freezing rain for later today (and especially this evening) Beth and I feel we should cancel tonight's Drinking Liberally. As a result we won't be gathering next until January 8th and so we'd like to wish everyone the best this holiday season. This Thursday: Drinking Liberally (in Lebanon)Submitted by Ed Tracey on Sun, 12/07/2008 - 10:08pm.We hope that everyone's Thanksgiving went well, and the best to you-and-yours this festive season. Our final gathering for 2008 will take place this coming Thursday, December 11th at the Salt Hill Pub (since Jesse's is inundated with office holiday parties this month). As mentioned - for part of the night, we will have a "Reading Liberally" session (a discussion about a pertinent book or magazine article). Ours will focus on the noted historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals" - about President Lincoln's choice of cabinet members. This is timely since the book is influencing president-elect Obama in choosing his team. Regardless of whether you've read it or not, feel free to join in. And there will be lots of time to discuss other subjects, as well. Hope to see you then! ------------------------------------ Thursday, December 11th, 2008 - 7:00 to (approx) 9:00 PM Please look for our "Drinking Liberally" table sign. Questions? E-mail to: hanover@drinkingliberally.org Upcoming Drinking Liberally eventsSubmitted by Ed Tracey on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 12:03am.We had such a good time last week celebrating the election; nice to see so many of you. Today, we thought we'd review the events for the rest of the year. We will be skipping the last Tuesday of November: historically the time just before Thanksgiving results in poor attendance. In addition, we will skip the last Tuesday in December (falling in the period between Christmas and New Year when many are otherwise busy). So our final gathering for 2008 will take place on Thursday, December 11th. But since this is during the period when Jesse's is inundated with office holiday parties (I will be at one myself) we will gather instead at the Salt Hill Pub in downtown Lebanon. (We will send out a reminder ahead of time as usual; this is just an advance notice). One twist for that night: normally the conversation is free-flowing, but many chapters engage in what is called "Reading Liberally". That is - have a discussion about a pertinent book or magazine article (for part of the night). Beth would like to lead a discussion of the noted historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals" - about President Lincoln's choice of cabinet members. This is timely since the book is influencing president-elect Obama in choosing his team. This discussion will only occupy part of our time (and you *certainly* need not have read the book to attend) but it will offer a focused discussion (on the choice of an incoming cabinet) as some have suggested in the past. But that will be for next month - for now, please enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend as we have much to be thankful for in 2008. And we'll send out a reminder when we approach the next Drinking Liberally event. See all blog posts from this chapter |
