A Visit from St. Barack

We will meet tonight at our regular time and place, 5:30 at Buffalo South. Below is a wonderful Holiday message from the original Drinking Liderally

A Visit from St. Barack
(with thanks to Clement Clark Moore)

'Twas the night before Elections, when through the US
Americas were nervous...we're in such a mess.
Our dreams we had hung on an election with care,
In hopes a new President soon would be there.

The bankers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of bailouts danced in the heads;
But for most of the country, it's not quite a snap
Surviving the economy's long winter's nap.

When slowly all over, there arose such a clatter,
We sprang up & realized our vote really did matter.
Into campaigning, we flew like a flash,
And one night in November, we made a big splash.

Now through the darkness, the war & the woe,
We see new directions our country can go.
And what to our wondering eyes should appear?
A sleigh pulled by Change, that soars over the fear.

With a lean & young driver, & smart - what a shock!
I knew in a moment, must be St. Barack!
With speed & with purpose, his Cabinet came,
His strong Team of Rivals, he called the by name:

"Now Daschle! now, Geithner! Now, Holder, Richardson!
On Solis! Napolitano! And of course Hillary Clinton!
Stimulus! Reform! Accountability! All!
Fast out of the gate, no time to stall!"

As tax revenue in the Bush years did fly,
into CEO pockets, far from public eye,
So fast into action the Cabinet flew,
With 8 years of madness to work to undo.

Then, on TV, we heard the applause,
And entered a man who, despite flaws,
Helps us believe we'll turn it around --
On stage, St. Barack leaped with a bound.

With a serious look he breaks every while,
With a quick little joke, & infections bright smile,
He looks Presidential, what can we say?
...As long as he puts that Blackberry away.

At one side his family, beautiful, hopeful,
Warms all our souls, to the most mopeful.
On the other a helper we all take such pride in;
Who doesn't feel good about VP Joe Biden?

Things aren't great, that's plain to see
And in this transition, we don't always agree,
But when he grins like a kindly & generous elf,
We laugh & we hope, in spite of ourself.

With his personal story & charisma unending,
He helps set us back on course to be mending
Rips here at home & our ties abroad --
That he inspires, we happily laud.

He's ready to dig in and get straight to work,
And we can be done with that other jerk...
While we may be a bit down & times are tough,
as one nation we say, Enough is Enough.

He won't fix it all -- there just isn't a way --
It will take ALL of us pulling this sleigh.
But at least now with courage, exclaim we might:
"Happy Christmas to all, let's set America right!"

Share the holidays, your hopes & a drink or two
with your local progressive social club.

Liberal Trivia

We will be trivializing at Buffalo South tonight because of the holiday on Thursday. Come early to eat.

Practice question:
In the word of the old rhyme "Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat". Not many people eat goose now. What does make a traditional British Christmas dinner in the 21st century?

Happy Repeal Day!

From Wikipedia -

On Dec. 5, 1933, national Prohibition came to an end as Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, repealing the 18th Amendment. Did you know, the term "speakeasy" comes from a patron's manner of ordering alcohol without raising suspicion — a bartender would tell a patron to be quiet and "speak easy". A blind pig, also known as a blind tiger, originated in the United States in the 1800s, when blue laws restricted the sale of alcoholic beverages. A saloonkeeper would charge customers to see an attraction (such as an animal), and provide a "complimentary" alcoholic beverage, thus circumventing the law.

The differences between a speakeasy and a blind pig were that a speakeasy was usually a higher class establishment (some in New York and other large cities even required coat and tie for men, and evening dress for women), and speakeasys invariably offered food, music or entertainment, or all three, besides drinking. A blind pig was generally a lower class dive, where only beer and liquor were available. Does that make Buffalo South a Speakeasy or a Bind Pig? Let's discuss it tonight, 5:30ish.

News about Anne - The State Elections Commission threw out Wallace Scarborough's protest over his election loss to Anne Peterson Hutto. After hearing about two hours of testimony, the Commission withdrew to meet with counsel for 15 minutes, and then voted unanimously to deny the protest.

Scarborough has 10 days to appeal the decision to the State Assembly. Anne is functioning as a state representative, although she hasn't been sworn in. That final confirmation of her victory will take place shortly.

Its at ten pm on Sunday night, rather late, but that works for us still. I am enclosing the website with a sample of the music style you can listen to as well. They are voted the best band in Charlotte and its an audience participation type of band. You bring your kazoo!

I just thought the drinking liberals were the perfect bunch. Charles and I love music and dancing so we are trying to get a group together who likes to do the same. At least the music part!

From Maxine Poris –

I'm wondering if someone from the group can help me. I'm looking for a home for my Border Collie because I am in bad health and can no longer care for her. She is beautiful - black and white with floppy ears. She weighs 45 lbs. She's 3 yrs old. She's housebroken, crate trained, walks well on leash, is good in car. She's spayed, microchipped, has all her shots. She's very smart - learns quickly. She's sweet, loyal, and very affectionate. She's good with other animals, and loves kids. If anyone is interested in a great dog, that can give her a wonderful home, please call me at 406-6881.

Thanks,
Maxine
