Who will be the district 5 council person?

According to the Chattanoogan Poll (which is only statistically accurate if your largest constituency is Grumpy Old Men, remember their District 6 poll?) Walter Williams will be the next council person for District 5.

For City Council District 5, should the choice be:

Angela Clark - 75 votes - 11.52%
Beatrice Hicks - 69 votes - 10.6%
Thomas Scott - 58 votes - 8.91%
Luther Shockley - 72 votes - 11.06%
Walter Williams - 377 votes - 57.91%

Total votes:651

The sheriff election is Aug. 7.

BECK GETS ENDORSEMENT
Hamilton County sheriff nominee and County Commissioner Greg Beck’s campaign announced Friday he has won the endorsement of the Chattanooga Building and Construction Trades Council, along with a $1,000 donation. The group represents workers in the construction industry.

Independent sheriff candidate Tim Akins was endorsed by the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers union earlier in the week.

The sheriff election is Aug. 7. Republican Jim Hammond, independent Jim Winters and write-in candidate Fred Fuson also are in the running.

District 5 Vacancy Application Process

Chattanooga, Tennessee – Candidates interested in applying for the Chattanooga City Council District 5 vacancy are required to submit a letter of interest to the Clerk of the City Council before 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2008. Persons submitting a letter must have been a resident of District 5 for at least one year. (seriously)

Council offices are located at 1000 Lindsay Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37403-4233.

Those submitting a letter should state an interest in the position and indicate that they will not be a candidate for the November 4, 2008, election for the District 5 vacancy. A resume or biographical sketch should be attached to the letter. The person elected to fill the vacancy will serve until the November 4 election.

Council members will interview all applicants during the regular Council meeting on June 10 at 6:00 p.m. Following interviews, Council members will cast votes for the candidate to fill the vacancy and the selected candidate will be sworn-in immediately.

The person elected to fill the vacancy will be asked to attend training sessions, along with Council members, on June 11, June 18, and July 16 in the Council Conference Room.

Attention Media: No additional information on the District 5 vacancy process will be offered until Friday, June 6, at which time a complete list of candidates will be made available.
