Drinking Liberally tomorrow

Hello Utah liberals! Once again it's coming in on the end of the week and that means it's time for another round of Drinking Liberally! And once again, we've got plenty to talk about: North Carolina's anti-gay marriage vote, and President Obama's personal opinion in favor of gay marriage. Or locally, we can talk about the layoff of nine Salt Lake Tribune employees.

Laura has lined up some guest speakers for the next few months! This month, on the 25 it will be Bryan Schott from UtahPolicy.com. Bryan will be sharing the inside dirt on local politics with "Ten Things I Think I Think before the November Elections."

Bryan Schott is Managing Editor and Chief Muckraker for UtahPolicy.com. He has previously worked at KCPW radio, KUER Radio and KSL. He has covered politics in Utah since 1998. He also writes a the "Media Player" column for City Weekly.

Then on June 22nd, we'll have Tim Chambless - Department of Political Science at the University of Utah - with a Preview on the Primaries.

Many of you already know of Tim Chambless, and maybe you've heard him speak at Drinking Liberally before. But for those who don't know, Tim is an Associate Professor/Lecturer for the Department of Political Science at the University of Utah and Academic Outreach Coordinator for the Hinckley Institute of Politics. Tim recently partnered with former U.S. Senator Bob Bennett with a U of U student seminar.

On July 20th it's The Left Show, with Jeff Bell and Forrest Shaw. "We need to talk about ALEC". Especially since the ALEC convention is here in SLC July 25-27.

"The Left Show, a weekly self-produced podcast that takes the piss out of conservative politics, local and national, with equal parts vitriol and
comedy, making for an hour-plus "radio" show (complete with swear jar) somewhere between The Daily Show and Real Time With Bill Maher."

Left Leaning Logic and Liberal Libations at Drinking Liberally This Week

Hello everyone,

It is that time of week again where we get together to rail against the system and plan a Progressive paradise or just have a couple of drinks and socialize with friends. So, join us at our regular time on Friday, May 4(6:30 PM-9:30 PM) in our usual location in the back room at Piper Down (1492 S. State St) where we will prepare for that most American of Mexican holidays, Cinco de Mayo!

In the News

Local

There were crazy shenanigans at the GOP State convention and it may just give Democrat, Jay Seegmiller, a window of opportunity to take the 2nd Congressional district.

Meanwhile it has been a bad week for Republican Senate hopeful, Dan Liljenquist as a campaign staff member seems to be having trouble with those pesky SEC rules and Orin Hatch is avoiding debating Liljenquist.

National

Fox News seems to believe that the killing of Osama Bin Laden a year ago was a premeditated campaign ploy by Obama aimed at the 2012 election.

The Romney campaign hired and then prompyly fired an openly gay spokesman amid pressure from the Christian right.

Our very own Senator, Orrin Hatch, voted against renewing the Violence Against Women Act.

World

A Blind Chinese dissident forces the Department of State to make a call about whether the U.S. values Human Rights or trade more.

One of the 20th century's most evil MF's, Charles Taylor, was convicted in The Hague for War Crimes.

Aung San Suu Kyi was sworn in to Parliament in Myanmar after being held under house arrest for two decades.

Drinking Liberally tonight!

Good morning, liberals!

This is your weekly reminder that Drinking Liberally will be meeting, as always, in the back room of the Piper Down starting at 6:30 tonight. With Democrat and Republican conventions last weekend, we'll have plenty to talk about.

One of the topics of conversation that comes up from time to time at Drinking Liberally - especially when someone new to town stops in - is how difficult it can be for a responsible adult to get a drink in Utah. Well, take a look at this map:

At least there's one map in which Utah is blue!

See you all tonight!

4/20 Meetup

Hola Liberal Drinkers,

The Democratic County Convention last week was a fun experience and we have an exciting slate of candidates to get behind this year. Next up is the State Democratic Convention Friday night and Saturday morning. So join us for a couple of drinks at our regular time (6:30 PM-9:30 PM) in our usual location in the back room at Piper Down (1492 S. State St.) to talk about the candidates or to bolster your constitution for that 7:00 AM registration if you are a delegate. I am sure we will also find time to discuss the Secret Service and Colombian prostitutes as well as Mitt Romney and his new emphasis on courting the women vote.

One final note, if you are a delegate in Congressional District 2 then you will have the opportunity to vote for our own Laura Arellano for National Delegate.

We hope to see you all there tomorrow!

Drinking Liberally on Friday the 13th

It's coming up on that time of the week where the greatest liberal minds in Salt Lake gather at the Piper Down, and with drink in hand, talk about the current state of affairs.

This week our discussions might include Ann and/or Mitt Romney. Or if you're a Democrat, you might talk about the Salt Lake County nominating convention on Saturday. Or we might want to talk about how even as an LGBT student on the BYU campus, it gets better. http://youtu.be/ekoVGgn5sT0

Whatever we talk about, join us tomorrow night from 6:30 to 9:30 in the back room of the Piper Down.
