Hello my fellow Liberals,

I am pleased to inform you that the first Drinking Liberally for the Year 2013 is happening tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13th at Casa Moreno, 223 N. Citrus Avenue in Downtown Covina. I know tonight you were watching the President’s State of the Union Address to hear a vision for the future of America. However, even while we look forward, I find helps to remember where we have come from.

Two hundred and four years ago today, Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, was born. We celebrate the day of his birth to commemorate the life of one of the greatest men to ever swear the oath of office. His presidency was marked by the greatest division the country has ever experienced and the bloodiest war in American history. The words he used to bind the Union together in the face of its greatest crisis still echo down to us today. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, turning a war to save the union into, also, a war to end the grievous crime of slavery, making the freed men and women “thenceforward and forever free.” The promises of these words have not been fully kept. Thought this is a nation of laws, it is a nation of human beings as well. We all have our foibles and flaws, as well as talents and virtues.

But as much as the words of our history are promises, they are also challenges. When asked by a passing woman about the just finished Constitutional Convention in 1787 and what form of government our newly born nation would take, Benjamin Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.” During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln uttered these immortal words to commemorate the graves of the patriots who fought and died for that keeping. I shall leave you with them, and I hope to see you all tomorrow.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us
that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion
that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain
that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom
and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
