Join us for the kick-off to the 2017 Coastal Bend Social Forum with keynote speaker Morris Dees. Mr. Dees is the co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. His talk will be "With Justice for All in a Changing America." He is the recipient of various awards including the American Bar Association Medal, its highest honor, in 2012 for his practice of law for the public good. In 2016, Dees received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize, the highest award given by the King Center. The award recognizes Morris Dees' achievements in fighting racism and his commitment to nonviolence. He is the author of several books and the subject of many others as well as being the subject of a made for TV movie. He is perhaps best known for his succesful work combatting hate groups across this nation. The 2017 Coastal Bend Social Forum will continue on Sept. 16th at the Wolfe Recital Hall with many other notable speakers in the area of social justice and the law. On the night of the 16th we will have Art for Social Justice at the Exchange restaurant downtown. More on both these events on other event pages. The event is sponsored by the Center for Progressive Studies and Culture, Del Mar College Social Sciences and Cultural Programs and Texas A&M University Office of the President.

Join us for Day 2 of the Coastal Bend Social Forum. We will have a number of speakers on a variety of social justice topics centered mainly around the legal profession. We will have speakers on environmental law, immigration law, labor law, drug law, people's rights, changes in the Nueces County District Attorney's Office, First Amendment rights, and much more. We will be posting bios of some of the speakers and will post the exact schedule as soon as it is finalized.
