Drinking Liberally Shot of Truth

Collusion and Collision

The FBI director appears before Congress,
the House Intel chair privately briefs Trump,
amidst new reports of hard evidence of collusion
as Trump’s Russia ties rush into the headlines.

Republicans collude on a rushed repeal
to take healthcare from 24 million Americans,
but face intra-party collisions between
moderates feeling pressure from voters
and right-wingers who think it doesn’t repeal enough.

And as Trump’s Court pick gets a hearing,
Democratic leaders demand no action on Gorsuch
until criminal investigations into Trump are complete
setting up a collision over the contested confirmation.

But as some Dems consider breaking a filibuster,
the real collision might come with their constituents,
who won’t tolerate their careless collaboration.

Collusion, collision, and one conclusion:
You deserve conversation and a libation
at your local progressive social club.

Unhealthy, Unwealthy, Unwise

The majority of Americans, including Republicans,
dislike the GOP plan to repeal Obamacare,
which would increase the uninsured by 24 million.
So Paul Ryan tries to pass it even more quickly.

The courts again block Trump’s Muslim ban,
noting the same problems of the first Muslim ban
which had already been ruled unconstitutional.
So Trump just pledges to try it again.

Trump’s 2005 taxes tell us what we know:
That there’s far more we need to know
about who he owes and his entanglements.
But his team is focused on bizarre wiretap claims
to deflect from the calls to investigate his Russia ties.

And meanwhile, Trump has a budget
that cuts the EPA, NEA, Meals on Wheels and PBS.
But puts more money into missiles and The Wall.

From a plan to attack our healthcare,
to a budget that eviscerates our communities
to unconstitutional influences and assaults,
the GOP agenda is Unhealthy, Unwealthy and Unwise.

Need a change? Raise a toast to your health,
share the wealth of friendship,
and wise up with engaging conversation
at your local, progressive social club.

TrumpNoCare

In the Republican frenzy to replace Obamacare,
their plan would cover less, cost more,
has been rejected by hospitals, doctors, seniors,
yet they rush forward to avoid scrutiny
and ditch Affordable Care for unaffordable and careless.

After Sessions' revelations and recusal,
and amid ongoing calls for his resignation,
Trump makes accusations against Obama,
unconcerned that they're baseless and bizarre.

Trump issues a second Muslim ban,
despite evidence it won't make us safer,
concerns it's unconstitutional and divisive,
and just weeks after his first was struck down.

But Trump doesn't care about rule of law,
about the truth, or about how his policies affect
the health and livelihood of regular Americans.

We've gone from Obamacare to TrumpNoCare
and the GOP's acting like it doesn't care either.

But if you care for conversation and camaraderie,
come lift a libation with like-minded lefties
at your local progressive social club.

Disjointed Sessions

Trump hoped to dominate the week's media
with an address to the joint session of Congress
but instead the revelations of Sessions' perjury
has unsettled any efforts at a Trump reset.

The unqualified man with a racist history
lied under oath about Trump's Russia ties
proving right the voices of both parties
demanding an immediate independent investigation.

And as Republicans return from a recess
in which constituents confronted them on the ACA,
they'll have trouble supporting Trump's repeal
if none of them can agree on how to replace.

Whatever bump Trump got from his joint session
has been bumped by a disjointed houses of Congress
and thumped by the only Sessions now in the news.

After a speech of falsehoods and revelations of perjury,
Trump and Sessions have one thing in common:
they both lied before Congress.

And we're not taking those lies lying down.

Join a session of socializing, strategizing and sipping
with like-minded liberals and lots to discuss
at your local, progressive social club.

Recess Actions vs. Regressive Factions

Constituents show up in record numbers
to confront members of Congress during recess,
but Republican reps retreat from public events
faster than they retreat from defending
our civil rights and liberties in Washington.

Voters defend health care and democracy
their communities and their neighbors,
while Trump denies Russian entanglements,
depletes our good will with global allies,
and seeks to derail the Constitution.

And while Americans everywhere stand united,
the divided, divisive administration repeals
rights and respect for transgender students.

In choosing between a rightwing agenda
and a remarkable, rejuvenating resistance,
it's been recess actions vs regressive factions.

On Monday, it’s back to DC
… and the work continues.

Take a break to lift spirits, voices, and pints
as you share a toast to friendship and resistance
at your local progressive social club.

National Insecurity

Trump’s national security chief resigns,
the White House can’t get its story straight
on who knew what and when they knew,
and Flynn kept getting briefings even after
the DOJ warned he could be blackmailed.

Executive orders are stopped by courts,
but Trump advisers say they can ignore judges,
as they try to appoint a Supreme Court justice,
and as ICE detains DACA recipients
and other folks just for not having ID.

Israel and China policy change on the fly,
legions of civil servants resign en masse
while others go rogue within departments
that are being led by a Swamp Cabinet
of kleptocrats, oligarchs, and autocrats.

Puzder is sunk, Conway is scolded,
campaign aides were emailing with Russia,
Trump handles North Korea in public over dinner,
and finds time to tweet against critics and companies
to divert attention from his team’s impeachable offenses.

If you’re feeling nervous, you’re not alone
as this is all a matter of National Insecurity.
And for better or for worse it seems
that Trump may be as insecure as the rest of us.

Find safety, security, savvy and sanity,
as you share ideas and a few beers
at your local progressive social club.

Resist and Persist

Elizabeth Warren was silenced in Senate sessions
debating the appointment of racist Jeff Sessions.
She spoke the truth, was warned, and persisted,
a stand for justice against the Department of Injustice.

Democrats did unite in the fight to defeat DeVos,
and though they delayed, decried, they couldn’t derail
as a tie breaking vote from Mike Pence decided
a depressing, destructive choice for education.

As Trump’s court pick courts senators,
Trump courts a fight with the courts himself,
attacking judges who have stood up
to tell him to stand down on the Muslim ban.

On every front, Trump is giving Americans
reason to rise up and resist.
And Sen. Warren is giving us
the model to stand up and persist.

No need to resist good conversation and company
and we insist you raise your voice and a glass
as we persist in finding like minded left leaners
at your local progressive social club.

One Ugly Groundhog

Trump's ban on Muslims and refugees
harkens back to the worst isolationism
of dark shadows of America's past,
but was met now with inspired protests
taking over airports and airwaves.

Trump's parade of outrageous Cabinet picks
get unified support from lockstep Republicans,
who "voice concerns" then vote yes.
But at least Democrats have started to fight
from delays to walk-outs in the Senate.

More conflicts of interest with businesses.
More coziness with Vladimir Putin.
More promotions for white nationalist Steve Bannon.
More lies from Twitter and the Press Secretary.
But at least now the press is calling them lies.

Each day with Trump is a brand new outrage,
and feels like we're trapped in a terrible day on repeat.
It's like a horror version of the movie Groundhog Day
...and one ugly groundhog is at the center of attention.

But at least people are speaking up and marching,
stiffening spines and refusing to be silenced,
and maybe grassroots energy and opposition
can turn this Groundhog Day into an early spring.

Get comfort, consolation, ideas, and information
while sharing liberal laughs and libations

Executive Disorders

Trump unleashes a wave of executive orders
attacking the environment and immigrants,
healthcare, religious liberty, and basic humanity.
And more dangerous orders are on the way.

Meanwhile, as he gags his own agencies,
resistance twitter feeds emerge.
As he pushes disastrous nominees,
there’s an exodus of career staffers.

Amidst his angry, absurd, and unhinged tweets,
his own team leaks contrary information
as they go to war with the media over misinformation
and try to shut the public from all transparency.

His inauguration was dwarfed by the Women’s March,
Senate offices are flooded with protests,
and even in the face of Trump Republican extremism,
the majority have made clear we will not be silent.

We are outraged and alarmed at his executive orders,
and signs of his personal and professional disorders.
But at least, the American public is responding
with a little disorder of our own.

Get delightfully disorderly with dialogue and a drink
as you share ideas, politics, and a pitcher or two
at your local, progressive social club.

Good Bye, Obama. Hello, New Trauma.

Barack Obama had some highs and some lows,
he righted the economy but gave bankers a pass,
he withdrew from wars but expanded drones.
His successor is an ill-tempered, inexperienced
would-be strongman with Putin’s support.

Obama fought for some civil rights and liberties,
but saw other rights eroded at state levels.
He was stymied by an obstructionist Congress
but made gains when he found his executive pen.
His successor has chosen cabinet members
who disdain the very notion of functional government.

Obama found the words to heal and inspire,
to go high at our nation’s lowest moments.
His successor attacks journalists in person
and everyone else over Twitter.

Obama had the audacity of hope.
Trump has shown the audacity to grope.

From a curtain call today
to an uncertain fall tomorrow.

From No-Drama Obama to a whole new trauma.

It’s going to be a long four years.

Let’s hold on tight and hold on to each other
with good company, good ideas, good toasts,
at your local progressive social club.
