The First 100 Minutes

With a short speech on renewing America,
a new President gave hope to a nation,
a new direction to DC, relief to the world
& a stern rebuke to the man on his way out.

Even before orders to close Guantanamo,
policies about lobbying and White House staff,
and directions to freeze Bush regulations,
his words set the tone to empower us to make change.

And yet, within those same first minutes of joy,
a seizure reminded how fragile liberal leadership is,
GOP schemed to block aid to children & working families,
and Fox asked whether Justice Roberts' stumbled oath
meant that Obama wasn't President yet.

We all talk about a President's first 100 days.
Obama's first 100 minutes showed how much changed
...and how much work there remains to do.

So let's dust ourselves off & restore America.

But first, how about a drink?
A toast to a new President, to new debates,
& one last chortle for the man finally gone
at your local progressive social club.

John - re:your querys about where to go with the chapter - I think every other week during the off-season is quite adequate; I don't know about others, but I have trouble getting it together to come every single week. I would also like to have a few members of our state legislature and city council pay us a visit and give us a chance to talk to them individually. Personally, I'd love to talk to the mayor one-on-one. I am also not that encouraged by the bar. While it wasn't that easy to get to DD and it was quite loud, a little bird tells me there are better possibilities out there. While I'm spoiled 'cuz this is so close to my home, driving a bit wouldn't bother me to find a bit more amenable locale. Is there something available in the Highlands or University Park neighborhoods? Having led a large organization myself, as well as dealing with long-term unemployment, it can really put a big hole in your balloon of life. It sounds like maybe it's time to open up your big box for a look at some other boxes in life - I know it sure helped me to do that. Also, right now, about the only reliable jobs to be found, it seems, are found through temp agencies. I know they're WAY below your skills, but sometimes life tells us we have to do some ugly things to survive. Employed or not, you're our "leader" and social thermometer...it'll eventually all wash out.
