In 2008, Will the US Recede or Re-Seed?

As the US heads toward a recession,
the Bush team is slow to act,
the GOP wants Bush's tax cuts permanent
...but what about investing in our future?

In the tightest 2 party primary in decades,
media coverage recedes to simplifications,
sensationalizing race & highlighting tears
rather than cultivating deeper discussion.

On climate change, international health & peace,
GOP candidates retreat from the global community
instead of planting the seeds of collaboration.

After 7 years of moral & political recession,
we can further recede...or can we now re-seed?

In one year, a new Pres will be inaugurated
...let's make sure it's a step forward.

Who Let All These Voters Decide?

Clinton was inevitable, Huckabee ignored,
& youth turnout would be low in cold Iowa.
Then people actually went to the polls.

Five days later, New Hampshire independents
didn't crown Obama, cratering Clinton prevailed
& McCain, first unbeatable, then DOA, won.

As every confident prediction's proved wrong,
& every TV talking head has had to back-pedal,
huge voter turnout has made history:
choosing the first Black candidate to win Iowa
& the first female to win New Hampshire.

Conventional wisdom may be conventional
...but it isn't always wise.

The polls and pundits were doing so well --
Why do these voters keep screwing everything up?

If only Congress & the President recognized
that on ending the war, healthcare & more
voters may know better than pundits as well.

You Say "This Isn't Heaven...It's Iowa" Like It's a Good Thing

You spend a year there, away from your job,
eating "fried everything," at diners & farms
& talking to the same "undecided" voters.

You talk ethanol instead of urban issues,
to an aging, white constituency that knows
just how much power they have over you.

Then in the icy heart of the freezing plains,
a handful of them engage in a weird process
to decide your fate...& that of the Free World.

In "Field of Dreams," Joe Jackson was told,
"This Isn't Heaven...It's Iowa."

By now, I don't think any of the candidates
would mistake Iowa for Heaven...
or if so, they might be ready to visit Hell
where at least there's a little heat.

But don't tell the Caucus-goers that!

For whom will Iowa be a Field of Dreams?
And which candidates will feel more like
the other Joe Jackson movie..."Eight Men Out"?

Take in the returns as you take in a few drinks
with like-minded left-leaning libation-lifters

A Toast to a New Year

Raise a glass to a hopeful, happy and healthy 2008.

And, if you're in need of a song tonight, below are the lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne," the New Year's anthem to Liberal Drinkers everywhere:

AULD LANG SYNE - (Robert Burns 1759-1796)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gies a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie-waught,
for auld lang syne.

2007: Year-in-Review or Year-of-Reruns?

Bush scored record unpopularity
yet stayed the course in Iraq,
& vetoed children's healthcare...twice

The GOP lost Congress but kept the power
to block the restoration of Habeas Corpus
& to keep spying on the American people.

The Conservatives proved a failure
yet the new AG won't condemn torture
& we nearly got tricked into war in Iran.

It must be the Writers' strike...
2007 was a rerun of right-wing flops
& a highlight reel of Bush's failures...
hopefully 2008 will feature new scripts.

And there were a few changes -- this time
Gore won something the Court couldn't take
...& Cheney didn't shoot anyone in the face.

Laughing Liberally To Keep From Crying: WWJD?

In the Christmas spirit...

The right-wing candidates might be asking "What Would Jesus Do?" But is this really the answer?

Courtesy of comedian Lee Camp

Happy holidays.

A Progressive Victory?...It's a Christmas Miracle!

Verizon & AT&T wanted retroactive immunity
but instead they got a lump of coal in their stocking.
That's what they get for being naughty, not nice.

The Senate Dems pulled a Scrooge:
nearly screwing over the little guy for the rich,
but having a change of heart just in time.

And though Chris Dodd didn't come down a chimney
he deserves milk 'n cookies from us all
for a Christmas miracle: a progressive victory!
( least for now...)

We always knew this was a liberal holiday:
after all, what right-winger ever cared about
a poor Middle Eastern boy with an unwed mom?

It's The Giving Season...& Dems Are Giving It All Away

The American people gave the Dems Congress
in order to stop the war...but after a year,
of funding the war & not changing course,
Dems are close to giving the Iraq issue away.

AT&T & Verizon gave Bush illegal help
to spy on the American people...
& now Senate Dems are considering
giving those phone companies amnesty.

The Dems gave Mukasey the green light,
though he's still fuzzy on "torture,"
& gave the helm of the CIA to Hayden,
who admits they destroyed crucial tapes.

...Yet Dems give them both free passes.

It must be the holidays, "the giving season"
...because Dems are giving it all away.
What'll they give next: The White House?

Fortunately, the GOP's cast of clowns
is working just as hard to give that back.

Give yourself a night of cheers & beers
as you lift your glass & your spirits
at your local progressive social club.
