Lone Wolf Screening and Panel Discussion on the Future of Journalism

The internet has drastically changed the paradigms for production, distribution, and consumption of information in global society, but adaptation has come slow and often tumultuously for print journalism. The family-owned paper is now virtually extinct, several mainstays of the print world have collapsed, and reporting has democratized, falling now to citizen journalists, bloggers, and Twitterers alongside traditional media. The remaining papers scramble to stay competitive and relevant to an increasingly-internet dependent audience without sacrificing their economic solvency.

In short, the viability of print journalism remains highly unsure in this transitional period.

Screening Liberally ponders the future of journalism with a special presentation of Lone Wolf Wednesday July 29th 7:30PM at The Tank. The short film follows blogger turned newspaper reporter, Josh Wolf, who served 226 days in jail, longer than any other journalist in American history, for refusing to turn over to authorities video of a San Francisco protest. This beautifully-shot film explores the tenuous distinctions between bloggers and staff journalists by presenting a new conception of “press” in America.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, featuring journalists, bloggers, and media activists, on the continuing evolution of journalism and the future of the fourth estate in the internet age.

Can bloggers fully supplant the need for professional reporters? Will pay-to-read online papers catch on or are readers too accustomed to free content? What benefits and dangers does the democratization of journalism hold for the American people? Find out the answers to these questions and more with Screening Liberally and Lone Wolf July 29th at The Tank.
