How to Beat the DC Heat

Fireworks in the Senate committee room
as Democrats object, protesters interrupt,
and Cory Booker interjects records --
critical, but confidential -- into the hearings.

Brett Kavanaugh dodges on Roe,
hasn't thought about presidential powers,
can't commit on pre-existing conditions
& turns from a grieving Parkland father.

And as Trumpworld is rocked
by Woodword's revelations
& by an insider's anonymous op-ed,
Senate Republicans don't break stride
in pushing Trump's lifetime nominee.

This administration is on fire,
threatening to burn us all
but the GOP denies it's warming
-- it's time for them to feel the heat.

But there's one way to beat the DC heat:
If our voices can't cool this blaze,
then our votes will need to extinguish it.
In the meantime, it's a long, hot summer.

McCain and Unable

John McCain passes away
& Trump is unable to show respect
without starting yet another
insulting, divisive, unnecessary controversy.

Andrew Gillum makes history
as Florida's first Black nominee for governor
& his right-wing opponent is unable
to go one day without racist dog-whistles.

Criminal investigations swirl around Trump,
& yet the GOP is unable—and unwilling—
to investigate Trump or hold him accountable,
instead rushing forward with Kavanaugh,
a lifetime appointment & get-out-of-jail-free card.

For all McCain's flaws, he was a senator
who embodied service in his lifetime,
passed campaign finance reforms,
& voted to save Obamacare.

A contrast to a White House occupant
who is unable to govern,
and unable to serve anyone but himself.
& a GOP unable to stand up to him.

It's the story of McCain and Unable,
as we head into fall & election season
where we'll see what voters are able to do.

Enjoy a summer night & some politics

More Than A Guilty Plea-sure

Trump's campaign chair Paul Manafort
is found guilty of 8 crimes,
more proof of the culture of corruption,
running through Trump-land.

His personal lawyer Michael Cohen
pleads guilty to 8 crimes
and implicates Trump himself
as a co-conspirator to his crimes.

Rep. Duncan Hunter indicted,
just a week after Rep. Chris Collins.
Collins was the first member of Congress
to endorse Trump—Hunter the 2nd.

Yet few Republicans dare speak out
against the Criminal-in-Chief --
perhaps because the GOP overall
is party to his criminal operation.

These are more than just guilty pleas—
they are proof of rampant corruption
& criminality all the way to the White House.

And as much as some of us may enjoy
watching Trump & his team squirm,
these are more than guilty pleasures --
these are yet more reasons to vote
& take action that Congress will not.

So whether you're outraged at guilty pleas
or enjoying the taste of guilty pleas-ures,
you could use a drink to wash the taste
of corruption out of our democracy.

Enjoy a drink, a night out, and good company
as you share news, views and booze

Trump takes revenge on a critic,
stripping former CIA chief of clearance,
leading one to wonder
whether it's Mueller he'll silence next.

He takes revenge on journalists,
calling them "enemies of the people"
and then lashes out at newspapers
who rally together to defend free press.

He takes revenge on Omarosa,
viciously insulting his former aide
after the reality star shined her light
on the unreal reality show of the White House.

Trump could use a 7-letter lesson
from the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin,
who left this earth but whose voice never will:

But if the Revenger-in-Chief can't learn respect,
voters will have to teach him at the ballot box.

Crimes and Missed Demeanors

Trump's old campaign chair Paul Manafort
is having his crimes paraded across headlines
by his longtime right-hand Rick Gates,
proving there's no honor among thieves.

Republican Rep. Chris Collins
and early Trump endorser and ally
is under arrest for insider trading
which took place on the White House lawn.

And while Trump's refusing to meet Mueller,
Omarosa may have recorded convos with him,
which may be bad form for a close aide
but intriguing news for an ongoing investigation.

The GOP is a party of crooks & thieves,
but also revealing they've lost all decorum.
Instead of the era of dignified crime,
now's a season of crimes and missed demeanors.

Chew over the news while you sip a drink,

The Fires and the Furies

As wildfires rage in California,
the GOP rages against environmental laws,
Trump targets rules that reduce pollution,
and the right-wing denies climate change.

With Manafort on trial, Giuliani on a tear
& Trump's close allies on the hot seat,
Trump responds to the high heat
by suggesting Sessions fire Mueller.

Senate Republicans push right-wing judges,
House GOP tries to impeach Rosenstein,
nobody is held accountable for family separation,
and the White House is still attacking health care.

When faced with a fire, Trump's instict
is to add fuel to the ferocious flame.
But if we're feeling furious & fired up,
the main fire we can focus on
is firing the GOP this November.

Checks and Imbalances

House Republicans go after Rosenstein
while giving Trump a free pass
& after a momentary rage over Putin,
they've mostly decided to forgive & forget.

Trump launches a Twitter war with Iran,
which may lead to a real war with Iran,
yet Congress won't reassert its role
to stop a mad king from madder wars.

The White House punishes journalists,
ignores court orders on reunification,
& pushes a nominee for the Supreme Court
who thinks a president can be above the law.

We believe in checks and balances --
but there's a seriously imbalanced White House
and the only checks we're hearing about
are the ones Cohen paid Stormy Daniels.

Find some balance & split the check
as you imbibe and expound
at your local progressive social club.

Treason's the Reason for the Season

Trump stood by his man Putin
instead of standing by the U.S.,
attacking U.S. intelligence
& clearly undermining his own.

Some Republicans spoke up,
but none took any action
to defend the Mueller investigation
which has produced more indictments.

And Trump, under fire, backpedaled,
claiming it was all a double negative.
Then doubled down on his lies,
negating Trump's credibility further.

The more Trump pumps Putin,
the more we need Trump put in his place:
Under pressure, under a microscope,
under oath—and potentially under indictment.

With all the talks of Russians,
let's hope the truth will rush in,
as we all get ready for Mueller Time.

For now, seems like
treason's the reason for the season.

Putin His Plan In Place

An archly conservative nominee,
Kavanaugh could overturn Roe,
undo climate regs, side with Big Biz,
& contend a president is unindictable.

Trump lashes out at NATO,
enjoying the chaos he creates
as he fights with longtime allies
& recklessly rumbles toward London.

While he avoids meeting Mueller
who's investigating Russian interference,
he finds time to prioritize a Putin pow wow.

From creating a generational court legacy
to upending generations of world order,
Trump's really putin' his plan in place

The world wasn't in great shape to start,
but boy is Trump working hard
to make it a whole lot worse.

The Fourth of July or Force of You-Lie

Any day we could have court nominee
who could cast a deciding vote
in decisions that would repeal rights
& rollback protections for Americans.

Republicans in Congress have failed
to protect separated families,
ensure food stamps to kids in need
or defend the Constitution from Trump.

Cabinet secretaries separate children,
detain families, commit terrorizing acts,
but the media scolds are concerned
that dinners in DC are interrupted.

At the center is a man whose lies,
defiance of justice, attacks on communities,
& rampant kleptocratic corruption
are being treated as the new normal
as we mark this Fourth of You-Lie

As we celebrate the birth of our country,
let's make sure we're not also marking
the death of our democracy.

Raise a toast to the country we want to be
& raise your spirits against the time we're in
at tonight's local progressive club.
