Supremely Bad to Supremely Worse

The Supreme Court allowed Texas
to draw racially discriminatory districts,
enshrining voter suppression further in law.

Then the Court upheld Trump's Muslim ban,
making good on his racist campaign pledge
& upending the American doctrine
of no religious tests for coming to our shores.

Yesterday, they ruled against unions,
dealing a huge blow to organized labor
& the gains we've all made in our rights
as a result of a history of union organizing.

The Supreme Court seemed bad already.
Then Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement,
a threat to Roe v. Wade & marriage equality,
& a shadow over potential cases
on family separation, the ACA & Russia probe.

Things just went from
Supremely Bad to Supremely Worse.

And it's a weird day when you mourn the guy
who just made a series of horrible decisions.
But retiring is somehow the worst choice of all.

We'll take to the streets this Saturday
to say Families Belong Together
& then to the streets again
to stop supremely right-wing takeover,
until we take power back --
but until then, we'll take to the bar as well.

You deserve a drink & liberal company

Summer Heatful and Some Are Hateful

Trump's team has separated families,
traumatized children, allowed abuses
& now Trump wants praise for reacting
to a crisis that his admin manufactured.

His solution leaves thousands of kids
terrified, alone, separated from families
while directing indefinite detention
of kids and families without due process.

All the while, he's attacking immigrants
in his policies and his rhetoric,
criminalizing folks seeking refuge,
& trying to blame Democrats at every turn.

It's the start of summer & we're feeling the heat
in the air, in our politics & in grassroots energy.
But we're also feeling the hate from Trump
& finding ways to bring our hearts to the forefront.

Summer is heat-ful, and some are hateful,
but with a national grassroots uprising,
maybe we can push for a summer of love.

What Do You Get a Madman Who Has Everything?

Trump's historic meeting with Kim
is short on detail, high on self-praise,
included a mock-up of a movie trailer
& would give the world hope
except for the two madmen involved.

He's so insecure that to prove he's powerful,
he tears immigrant kids from families,
hurls insults at allied world leaders,
& pursues a Twitter fight with Robert DeNiro.

His fixer Michael Cohen loses his lawyers,
his charity is sued by New York state,
his old friend Manafort may lose bail,
and even Sarah Huckabee Sanders
is heading to the exit.

And it's Trump's birthday!
But what do you get a madman
who already has money and power?

Right-wing voters are giving him
white nationalist, secessionist candidates!

His staff is giving him turnover,
headaches, leaks, and bad advice.

Maybe the rest of us should give something:
An indictment or an impeachment sound right.

Raise our hopes, humors, and glasses
as we toast summer & share a night

Let Them Eat Cake!

Trump plans a spectacle with football champs
then makes a spectacle of uninviting them
creating instead a faux-patriotic tribute
& making a spectacle of himself singing along.

He attacks immigrants, healthcare,
the environment, women's rights,
& the rule of law, Mueller & courts,
& declares he could pardon himself
(even for shooting Comey, as Rudy added).

And his right-wing administration
marks Ramadan attacking Muslims,
Pride month denying LGBTQ equal rights,
& the end of the school year by claiming
gun violence isn't a school safety issue.

At other moments, would-be despots
have quelled popular protest by
by declaring "Let them eat cake!"

After the Supreme Court decision,
the right-wing won't even let us do that.

Trump wants to be an emperor
of popular pomp and pageantry
& he can't even get that right.

Let's choose cakes over kings,
democracy over demagogues,
& let's let the Eagles soar!

Chime in, pipe up, laugh out loud
& lift your spirits while you lift a glass
at your local progressive social club.

Time to Barr Trump

Trump's administration separates children
from their families seeking safety in the U.S.,
but defends his own family by lashing out
at the Mueller probe that seems to be
hitting ever closer to hit home.

He calls immigrants "animals" & criminals
while he's the one flouting the rule of law —
ignoring a judge's decision on his Twitter use
& pardoning Dinesh D'Souza for no reason
other than protecting partisan cronies.

He attacks NFL players for protesting,
attacks Democrats for witch hunts,
attacks allies globally with insults --
but somehow makes Roseanne's racism
about ABC's attacks on him.

Roseanne becomes the latest person
held accountable for behavior
that Trump gets away with every day:
His insults, attacks, abuse, corruption.

Trump's far worse than Barr,
so when will Trump finally be barred --
from Twitter, the airwaves ...
and finally from the White house?

Until then, find solace and support,
good humor, good drinks & great politics

The Non-Art of the Non-Deal

Trump scuttles talks with North Korea
with mangled logic, a miserable letter
& shows that like with the Iran accord
he's just not interested in diplomacy.

He won't sit for a Mueller interview,
instead demonizing the investigation.
He won't work on a Dream / DACA deal
instead appealing to his xenophobic base.

He's lashing out on Twitter
& told by courts he can't block critics.
He's attacking women's health nationally
to strike a blow against Planned Parenthood.
And he can't stick a tariff policy 2 days in a row.

The only deal this deal-maker's made
is getting the NFL to turn on its own players.

He prides himself on the art of the deal,
but with Trump, it's the non-art of the non-deal
...and with his cabinet of kleptocrats
& family business, more like the art of the steal.

What the Kremlin and the NRA Have in Common

Trump escalates violence in the Middle East,
recklessly moves the U.S. Embassy,
destroys any prospects for peace,
& now could derail North Korea talks.

He calls immigrants "animals,"
he calls Mueller a witch-hunt,
& attacks investigations into his campaign
as a scandal bigger than Watergate.

Kushner's getting bailed out by Qatar,
Sheldon Adelson's buying his agenda in DC,
& Cohen was getting payments from Trump
despite long-running claims to the contrary.

And now a Republican-led committee reports
the Kremlin used the NRA to access Trump
& influence American elections.

What do the Kremlin & the NRA have in common?
They both wanted to see Trump in power --
and both are seeing a good return on investment.

Oliver North. Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump.
If only it were the set-up for a bad joke.

The Ignoble Prize

Millions of dollars from oligarchs & corporations
moved through a shell company controlled
by Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer & gatekeeper
in a web of anti-democratic corruption .

Trump violates the Iran diplomatic deal
based on lies and fearmongering,
heightening the threat of a Mideast war
& tension with European allies.

Horrific actions of the New York AG
lead to the latest #MeToo resignation.
When will the blackmailing Missouri gov
& the White House assaulter-in-chief be next?

And Trump says he's up for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nobody's been Nobel-worthy this week.
But looking at the news there are plenty
of candidates for an Ignoble Prize.

World Peace or a World in Pieces?

The Korean leaders take a historic step
on the road toward peace & diplomacy,
but Trump's assembled a war cabinet
that could scuttle talks & shatter the chance.

Pompeo, Trump & Netanyahu
take steps to shred the Iran nuclear deal,
raising tensions across the Middle East
& making clear what this administration
thinks about respect for diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Trump shuffles legal teams,
gets aggressive with Mueller's investigation,
threatens the deputy attorney general
& if his desperation turns to recklessness,
he could look to Weapons of Mass Distraction.

There are real opportunities to pursue
peace around the world --
and very real threats that this White House
could further shatter the world in pieces.

A Cabinet in Trump's Own Image

The anti-environment EPA head
is mired in corruption scandals,
preparing to blame his staff,
while dismantling environmental laws.

The anti-protection director
of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
advised bank lobbyists to donate more,
while dismantling the agency he runs.

And the unjust head of the DOJ,
a perjurer who recused from Russia probe,
refuses to recuse from the Michael Cohen case,
just to muddy the already filthy waters
in which the Trump team swims.

An anti-housing HUD head,
an anti-education Ed secretary,
& at Energy, a man who once campaigned
on abolishing the Department of Energy.

Welcome to the Trump Cabinet.
Corruption. Ignorance. Recklessness. Absurdity.
It really is a Cabinet in Trump's own image.

And that's before the new secretary of state
who believes in torture but not diplomacy,
and the nominee to head the VA,
mired in scandals of prescription abuse,
toxic workplaces & drunk driving.

The new Cabinet seems ready
to fit right in with the old.
